1.1 Background to the Study

Agriculture remains a key driver of Nigeria’s economy, but low soil fertility and high input costs limit productivity. Fertilizer subsidies aim to make fertilizers more affordable for farmers, thereby improving crop yields and food security (Adejumo, 2021). The government has introduced several fertilizer subsidy programs to boost agricultural output and reduce the dependence on food imports.

However, the impact of these programs has been mixed. While some farmers report improved productivity, others still struggle with access to quality fertilizers due to corruption, poor distribution, and late delivery (Ogunleye, 2022). Understanding the real impact of fertilizer subsidies on crop production will help guide future agricultural reforms.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

Despite the government’s efforts, crop yields in Nigeria remain below expectations. Many farmers complain about irregular supply and high prices despite subsidy programs. Additionally, the inefficiency in subsidy distribution has resulted in limited reach, especially for smallholder farmers (Eze, 2020). These issues raise questions about the effectiveness of fertilizer subsidy programs in improving agricultural productivity.
