The Impact of Fertilizer Subsidy on Crop Production in Nigeria
CHAPTER ONE
1.1 Background to the Study
Agriculture remains a key driver of Nigeria’s economy, but low soil fertility and high input costs limit productivity. Fertilizer subsidies aim to make fertilizers more affordable for farmers, thereby improving crop yields and food security (Adejumo, 2021). The government has introduced several fertilizer subsidy programs to boost agricultural output and reduce the dependence on food imports.
However, the impact of these programs has been mixed. While some farmers report improved productivity, others still struggle with access to quality fertilizers due to corruption, poor distribution, and late delivery (Ogunleye, 2022). Understanding the real impact of fertilizer subsidies on crop production will help guide future agricultural reforms.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Despite the government’s efforts, crop yields in Nigeria remain below expectations. Many farmers complain about irregular supply and high prices despite subsidy programs. Additionally, the inefficiency in subsidy distribution has resulted in limited reach, especially for smallholder farmers (Eze, 2020). These issues raise questions about the effectiveness of fertilizer subsidy programs in improving agricultural productivity.
1.3 Objectives of the Study
The main objective of this study is to assess the impact of fertilizer subsidies on crop production in Nigeria.
The specific objectives are to:
-
Examine the level of farmers’ access to fertilizer subsidies.
-
Evaluate the effect of fertilizer subsidies on crop yields.
-
Identify the challenges in fertilizer subsidy implementation.
-
Suggest measures to enhance the effectiveness of fertilizer subsidy programs.
1.4 Research Questions
-
How accessible are fertilizer subsidies to Nigerian farmers?
-
What is the relationship between fertilizer subsidies and crop yields?
-
What challenges affect the success of fertilizer subsidy programs?
-
How can fertilizer subsidy programs be improved for better outcomes?
1.5 Significance of the Study
This study will help policymakers design effective and transparent fertilizer subsidy systems. It will also help researchers and agricultural stakeholders understand the relationship between government support and agricultural productivity.
