The Role of Irrigation Farming in Enhancing Food Security in Nigeria
CHAPTER ONE
1.1 Background to the Study
Food security is a major global concern, particularly in developing countries where agriculture depends largely on rainfall. In Nigeria, irregular rainfall and prolonged dry seasons often result in low crop yields and food shortages (FAO, 2020). Irrigation farming provides a reliable solution by ensuring continuous water supply to crops, thereby enhancing food production and reducing hunger (Abubakar, 2021).
Over the years, several irrigation schemes have been developed across Nigeria, including the Hadejia-Jama’are and Lower Benue River Basin projects. Despite these initiatives, food insecurity persists due to inadequate infrastructure, poor maintenance of irrigation systems, and limited access to technology. Effective irrigation management remains essential for achieving sustainable agricultural productivity and national food security.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Nigeria’s dependence on rain-fed agriculture exposes the nation to risks associated with climate variability. Frequent droughts and irregular rainfall patterns have continued to reduce crop output, making the country vulnerable to food shortages (Ojo, 2021). Although irrigation farming offers potential solutions, its adoption remains limited due to high costs, poor management, and lack of technical expertise. Therefore, this study investigates how irrigation farming contributes to food security in Nigeria.
1.3 Objectives of the Study
The main objective of this study is to assess the role of irrigation farming in enhancing food security in Nigeria.
The specific objectives are to:
-
Identify the types of irrigation systems used in Nigeria.
-
Examine the impact of irrigation farming on food production.
-
Identify the challenges affecting irrigation practices.
-
Recommend strategies to improve irrigation farming for sustainable food security.
1.4 Research Questions
-
What types of irrigation systems are commonly used in Nigeria?
-
How does irrigation farming affect food production?
-
What challenges limit the success of irrigation farming?
-
What strategies can improve irrigation farming to ensure food security?
1.5 Significance of the Study
The study will be valuable to policymakers, agricultural agencies, and farmers. It will guide government investments in irrigation infrastructure and help farmers adopt more efficient water management systems for increased productivity.
