Effects of Different Protein Sources on the Growth Performance of Catfish (Clarias gariepinus)
CHAPTER ONE
1.1 Background to the Study
Aquaculture has become one of the fastest-growing food-producing sectors in the world. In Nigeria, catfish farming dominates the aquaculture industry due to its adaptability and market demand (Adewolu et al., 2021). However, feed cost remains the major challenge to profitability, with protein sources accounting for the highest proportion of feed expenses.
Protein is essential for fish growth, tissue development, and reproduction. Traditionally, fishmeal has been used as the main protein source in catfish diets, but its high cost and scarcity have driven research into alternative sources such as soybean meal, groundnut cake, and blood meal (Eyo, 2020). These plant and animal-based proteins differ in amino acid composition, digestibility, and palatability, which affect fish growth performance and feed utilization.
Evaluating the effects of different protein sources on catfish performance is important to develop cost-effective feeds and enhance aquaculture productivity. Sustainable use of local protein ingredients can reduce feed costs and dependence on imported materials, thus supporting food security and economic growth.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
The rising cost of fishmeal has made catfish production increasingly expensive, reducing profit margins for farmers. Although alternative protein sources exist, many have not been adequately tested under local conditions to determine their nutritional efficiency. This study therefore aims to evaluate the effects of various protein sources on the growth performance and feed utilization of catfish.
1.3 Objectives of the Study
The main objective of this study is to assess the effects of different protein sources on the growth performance of Clarias gariepinus.
Specific objectives include:
-
To determine the nutrient composition of selected protein sources.
-
To evaluate the growth performance of catfish fed with different protein diets.
-
To assess the feed conversion ratio and survival rate of catfish.
-
To identify the most cost-effective protein source for catfish production.
1.4 Research Questions
-
What is the nutrient composition of various protein sources used in catfish feed?
-
How do different protein sources affect catfish growth performance?
-
Which protein source produces the best feed conversion efficiency?
-
What protein source offers the most economical production outcome?
1.5 Significance of the Study
This research will provide useful information to fish farmers, feed manufacturers, and policymakers. It will guide the formulation of affordable and nutritionally balanced feeds, contributing to sustainable aquaculture development in Nigeria.
1.6 Scope of the Study
The study will focus on comparing different protein sources such as fishmeal, soybean meal, and groundnut cake in catfish diets. Parameters such as growth rate, feed conversion, and survival will be evaluated under experimental conditions.
