1.1 Background to the Study
Forage production plays an essential role in livestock nutrition by providing feed resources that influence animal performance. Fertilization is one of the most effective ways to improve forage yield and quality. The use of both organic and inorganic fertilizers enhances soil fertility, but their effects differ in terms of nutrient release, cost, and environmental impact (Adesina et al., 2021).
Organic fertilizers such as animal manure improve soil structure, increase microbial activity, and enhance long-term fertility. In contrast, inorganic fertilizers supply readily available nutrients that promote rapid plant growth (Ibrahim and Musa, 2020). However, excessive use of chemical fertilizers may lead to soil degradation and environmental pollution. Therefore, striking a balance between the two fertilizer types is vital for sustainable forage production.
Evaluating the effects of organic and inorganic fertilizers helps determine the best fertilization strategy for maximizing forage yield and nutritional quality. This study focuses on understanding how these fertilizers influence plant growth and nutrient composition, which are critical for livestock feeding.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Livestock farmers often face the challenge of low-quality forage, which limits animal productivity. Poor soil fertility and inadequate fertilizer application contribute significantly to this problem.
