Evaluation of Feed Conversion Efficiency in Grasscutter Production under Different Feeding Regimes
CHAPTER ONE
1.1 Background to the Study
Grasscutter (Thryonomys swinderianus) production has become an important aspect of animal agriculture in sub-Saharan Africa due to its high-quality meat and adaptability to local conditions. It serves as a sustainable source of animal protein and income for rural farmers (Opara et al., 2019). Feed cost represents the largest component of total production expenses, making feed conversion efficiency (FCE) a critical factor in profitable grasscutter farming.
Feed conversion efficiency measures how effectively an animal converts feed into body mass. Variations in feeding regimes, such as concentrate-based or forage-based diets, significantly influence growth rate, feed intake, and overall productivity (Adeniyi et al., 2021). Optimizing feed efficiency not only reduces production costs but also supports environmentally sustainable animal agriculture.
This study aims to evaluate the feed conversion efficiency of grasscutters under different feeding regimes to determine the most cost-effective and nutritionally balanced feeding strategy.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Despite the growing interest in grasscutter farming, limited information exists on the effect of feeding regimes on feed conversion efficiency. Many farmers rely on traditional feeding practices without scientific evaluation of their economic and nutritional impact. This often leads to low growth performance and high feed wastage. Therefore, there is a need to examine different feeding regimes to improve FCE and profitability in grasscutter production.
1.3 Objectives of the Study
The objectives of this study are to:
-
Compare the feed intake and weight gain of grasscutters under various feeding regimes.
-
Determine the feed conversion efficiency for each feeding treatment.
-
Identify the most cost-effective feeding strategy for improved growth performance.
1.4 Research Questions
-
How do different feeding regimes affect feed intake and weight gain?
-
What feeding regime provides the highest feed conversion efficiency?
-
Which feeding strategy is most economically viable for grasscutter production?
1.5 Significance of the Study
The findings from this research will help farmers optimize feeding strategies to achieve better productivity and profitability. It will also contribute to knowledge on sustainable livestock management by promoting efficient feed utilization and reducing production waste (Ogunji et al., 2022).
1.6 Scope and Limitation of the Study
The study will focus on growing grasscutters under different feeding regimes in a controlled environment. Limitations may include feed quality variability and restricted access to advanced feed analysis equipment.
1.7 Definition of Terms
Feed Conversion Efficiency (FCE): The ratio of body weight gain to feed intake.
Feeding Regime: A specific schedule or type of diet given to animals.
Grasscutter: A large African rodent domesticated for meat production.
