Effect of Moringa Leaf Meal Inclusion on the Growth Performance and Health Status of Broiler Chickens
CHAPTER ONE
1.1 Background to the Study
The use of natural feed additives in poultry nutrition has gained global attention due to concerns about antibiotic residues and resistance. Moringa (Moringa oleifera) leaf meal has emerged as a promising natural supplement because it contains essential amino acids, vitamins, and antioxidants (Nkukwana et al., 2019). Its incorporation into broiler diets can improve growth performance, immunity, and overall health.
Feed constitutes the largest production cost in poultry farming, often exceeding 70% of total expenses. By integrating Moringa leaf meal, farmers can reduce dependence on costly synthetic additives while maintaining performance levels (Olugbemi et al., 2010). Additionally, the antioxidant properties of Moringa may help alleviate oxidative stress, thereby enhancing poultry health and productivity.
This study aims to examine the effects of Moringa leaf meal inclusion on the growth performance and health status of broiler chickens under standard feeding conditions.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Despite the potential of Moringa leaf meal as a feed additive, there is limited understanding of its optimal inclusion levels in broiler diets. Over-supplementation may negatively affect feed palatability and nutrient absorption. Therefore, it is necessary to determine the appropriate inclusion rate that maximizes growth and health performance in broilers.
1.3 Objectives of the Study
The objectives of the study are to:
-
Evaluate the growth performance of broilers fed diets containing varying levels of Moringa leaf meal.
-
Assess the effects of Moringa inclusion on the health and hematological parameters of broiler chickens.
-
Determine the optimal inclusion level for improved productivity.
1.4 Research Questions
-
What is the effect of Moringa leaf meal on broiler growth performance?
-
How does Moringa supplementation influence the health status of broiler chickens?
-
What is the optimal inclusion rate of Moringa leaf meal in broiler diets?
1.5 Significance of the Study
The results of this study will contribute to the sustainable use of natural feed additives in poultry production. It will also provide scientific evidence supporting the economic and health benefits of incorporating Moringa leaf meal in broiler diets (Aye & Adegun, 2020).
1.6 Scope and Limitation of the Study
The research will focus on broiler chickens raised under controlled feeding conditions. The study will not include other poultry species. Limitations may involve feed ingredient variability and access to laboratory facilities for blood analysis.
1.7 Definition of Terms
Moringa Leaf Meal: A powdered form of Moringa oleifera leaves used as a natural feed additive.
Growth Performance: A measure of weight gain and feed efficiency in livestock.
Health Status: The physiological and hematological well-being of an animal.
