Comparative Analysis of Soap Produced from Plant and Animal Oils
CHAPTER ONE
1.1 Background to the Study
Soap remains one of the oldest and most widely used cleaning agents in human history. It plays a vital role in maintaining hygiene and preventing disease. Traditionally, soap is produced through the saponification of fats and oils with an alkali such as sodium hydroxide. The quality and characteristics of soap depend largely on the type of fat or oil used in production (Gohil & Pandya, 2012).
Plant oils such as coconut, palm, and olive oils are common natural sources of triglycerides. They produce soaps with good foaming ability and skin-friendly properties. In contrast, animal fats like tallow and lard yield harder soaps with longer shelf life (McKenzie, 2015). The increasing demand for sustainable and vegan products has shifted attention toward plant-based oils. However, animal fats remain cheaper and more available in some regions.
Comparing soaps made from plant and animal oils helps identify differences in quality, texture, pH, and cleaning performance. Such analysis supports both industrial formulation and local production improvement. Therefore, understanding these variations is essential for the cosmetic and domestic soap industries.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Producers and consumers often lack accurate information about how oil type influences soap quality. Without this knowledge, formulation processes may not achieve the desired balance between cost and performance. This study addresses the gap by comparing soaps derived from plant and animal oils.
1.3 Objectives of the Study
-
To produce soap samples from selected plant and animal oils.
-
To compare their physicochemical properties, including hardness, foaming, and pH.
-
To evaluate the influence of oil type on overall soap quality.
1.4 Significance of the Study
This study will provide scientific data to guide local soap manufacturers in selecting suitable raw materials. It will also promote the use of sustainable plant oils and improve consumer awareness. Moreover, the results will benefit industries that aim to develop eco-friendly soap formulations.
1.5 Scope of the Study
The research will focus on soap production using selected plant and animal oils. Laboratory tests will include measurements of hardness, foaming capacity, and pH. Additives and colorants will not be included.
