INTRODUCTION
1.1 Background of the Study
Academic advising is a critical aspect of university administration, as it guides students in making informed decisions about their academic and career paths. However, in most Nigerian universities, the advising process remains manual and time-consuming. Students often face delays in receiving feedback due to limited staff availability and large student populations (Eze, 2021). These challenges hinder effective communication and reduce the quality of guidance provided.
The advent of artificial intelligence (AI) has introduced chatbots as innovative tools for automating interactions and improving service delivery in different sectors, including education. AI-based chatbots use natural language processing (NLP) to understand and respond to user queries, offering instant and personalized assistance (Kumar & Singh, 2022). In the context of academic advising, a chatbot can provide information about course registration, academic requirements, and institutional policies while reducing the workload of academic staff.
By developing an AI-powered chatbot tailored for Nigerian universities, institutions can enhance student support services and promote a more efficient academic environment.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Most Nigerian universities lack efficient digital systems for providing academic guidance to students. The existing manual approach results in delays, misinformation, and limited accessibility, especially during busy academic sessions (Olawale, 2020). Furthermore, students often rely on peers for advice, which may lead to poor academic decisions.
There is, therefore, a need for an automated and intelligent system that provides accurate, real-time academic information and support. A chatbot system can help address this gap by offering students round-the-clock assistance through text-based communication.
1.3 Aim and Objectives of the Study
The main aim of this study is to develop an AI-based chatbot that provides academic advising services to university students.
The specific objectives are to:

1.6 Scope of the Study
The study focuses on developing an AI chatbot for academic advising in selected Nigerian universities. It will be limited to answering frequently asked questions related to courses, registration, and academic policies.
