Development of a Mobile App for Real-Time Campus Shuttle Tracking
CHAPTER ONE
INTRODUCTION
1.1 Background of the Study
Transportation is an essential part of university life, especially in large campuses where students and staff rely on shuttle services for mobility. However, many institutions still operate shuttle systems manually, leading to long waiting times and poor scheduling (Olawale, 2021). The use of technology, particularly mobile applications, can significantly improve transportation efficiency and user experience.
With the integration of Global Positioning System (GPS) technology, mobile apps can provide real-time information about shuttle locations and estimated arrival times. Such systems enable students to plan their movements effectively, reduce waiting time, and improve safety on campus (Singh & Patel, 2022).
This study aims to develop a mobile application that enables real-time tracking of campus shuttles, providing students with up-to-date transport information and improving mobility within the campus environment.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Most universities in Nigeria lack a structured system for managing shuttle transportation. Students often wait for long periods without knowing shuttle availability or location. This inefficiency causes frustration, time wastage, and poor transportation planning (Akinwale, 2020).
To address this issue, there is a need for a mobile-based system that allows users to track shuttles in real time and receive relevant updates on shuttle movements.
1.3 Aim and Objectives of the Study
The main aim of this study is to develop a mobile application for real-time campus shuttle tracking.
The specific objectives are to:
-
Design a mobile-friendly interface for shuttle tracking and notifications.
-
Integrate GPS technology to provide accurate shuttle location data.
-
Enable drivers to update shuttle status in real time.
-
Evaluate the usability and effectiveness of the system among students.
1.4 Research Questions
-
How can GPS technology be applied to real-time shuttle tracking?
-
What features improve user experience in a campus transport tracking app?
-
How reliable is the proposed system in providing accurate transport information?
-
How does the system enhance mobility and time management among students?
1.5 Significance of the Study
The project enhances transportation efficiency and convenience for students and staff. It also provides a model for improving university transportation systems through digital innovation. Furthermore, it contributes to smart campus development and encourages the adoption of mobile solutions in educational institutions (Okafor, 2023).
1.6 Scope of the Study
The study focuses on real-time shuttle tracking within university campuses in Nigeria. It covers mobile application development, GPS integration, and data synchronization between drivers and users.
1.7 Definition of Terms
