Development of a Mobile Health Application for Remote Patient Monitoring
CHAPTER ONE
INTRODUCTION
1.1 Background of the Study
The healthcare sector is increasingly adopting digital technologies to enhance service delivery. Mobile health (mHealth) applications enable patients to monitor their health conditions, communicate with doctors, and receive timely medical advice without visiting hospitals (Olawale, 2021). Consequently, mHealth solutions play a crucial role in improving healthcare accessibility, especially in rural and underserved areas.
Remote patient monitoring allows healthcare professionals to track vital signs such as heart rate, blood pressure, and glucose levels through mobile devices. This approach reduces hospital visits and ensures early detection of health complications (Kumar & Sharma, 2022).
Therefore, this study aims to develop a mobile health application that facilitates remote monitoring and promotes better healthcare outcomes through real-time communication and data sharing between patients and medical personnel.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Many patients, particularly those in rural communities, face challenges accessing regular medical checkups due to distance and limited healthcare infrastructure. As a result, preventable health conditions often worsen before professional intervention occurs (Eze, 2020).
There is a need for a mobile health application that enables continuous patient monitoring, timely communication, and early detection of health risks.
1.3 Aim and Objectives of the Study
The main aim of this study is to design and develop a mobile health application for remote patient monitoring.
The specific objectives are to:
-
Develop a mobile application that records and stores patients’ health data.
-
Integrate a real-time communication module between patients and healthcare providers.
-
Implement alert features for abnormal health readings.
-
Evaluate the usability and effectiveness of the developed application.
1.4 Research Questions
-
How can mobile technology enhance remote patient monitoring and communication?
-
What features improve the usability and effectiveness of mHealth applications?
-
How can real-time alerts help prevent medical emergencies?
-
What impact does remote monitoring have on healthcare outcomes?
1.5 Significance of the Study
This study is significant because it promotes accessible healthcare delivery and continuous medical monitoring. It supports early diagnosis and timely intervention, which ultimately reduces mortality rates. Moreover, the system demonstrates how mobile technology can improve the efficiency of healthcare systems in developing countries (Okafor, 2023).
1.6 Scope of the Study
The study is limited to the design and development of a mobile application for monitoring patient data. It focuses on remote tracking, communication, and alert functionalities.
1.7 Definition of Terms
mHealth: The use of mobile devices to deliver healthcare services and information.
Remote Monitoring: The process of observing patients’ health data from a distance.
Healthcare Application: A software tool designed to support medical diagnosis, monitoring, or treatment.
