Design and Implementation of an Online Course Evaluation System
CHAPTER ONE
INTRODUCTION
1.1 Background of the Study
Course evaluation plays a crucial role in improving teaching quality and enhancing student learning experiences. It allows institutions to gather valuable feedback from students regarding teaching methods, course content, and classroom engagement. Traditionally, most universities conduct course evaluations using printed forms. Unfortunately, this manual approach often results in delays, misplaced data, and limited analysis (Adebayo, 2022).
With the advancement of web technology, many institutions are now shifting toward online systems. An online course evaluation system offers a faster, more efficient, and reliable way to collect student feedback. It enables real-time data collection and automated reporting, which helps lecturers and administrators make informed decisions (Okoro & Musa, 2023). In addition, online systems ensure anonymity, which encourages students to provide honest and constructive opinions.
By moving from paper-based methods to digital platforms, schools can save time, reduce administrative workload, and improve response accuracy. Therefore, this study focuses on the design and implementation of an online course evaluation system that enhances transparency, efficiency, and data-driven academic improvement.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Many tertiary institutions still rely on manual methods to gather student feedback. These paper-based systems are slow, prone to data loss, and difficult to analyze. As a result, student opinions are often underutilized in improving course delivery. Furthermore, administrators spend considerable time sorting and summarizing results manually. There is a clear need for a web-based system that simplifies data collection, ensures confidentiality, and provides instant analytical reports.
1.3 Aim and Objectives of the Study
The main aim of this research is to design and implement an online course evaluation system that automates feedback collection and analysis.
The specific objectives are to:
-
Develop a web platform that enables students to submit course evaluations easily.
-
Store feedback securely in a structured database for analysis.
-
Generate automatic reports that highlight teaching performance and areas for improvement.
-
Evaluate the systemβs effectiveness in enhancing the feedback process.
1.4 Significance of the Study
This project contributes to improving the quality of education by promoting continuous feedback and performance review. It helps lecturers identify their strengths and weaknesses while encouraging better teaching practices. Administrators also benefit from automated reports that support data-driven decision-making. Moreover, the system promotes efficiency by minimizing paperwork and processing time.
1.5 Scope of the Study
The research covers the design and development of a web-based course evaluation system. It focuses on student feedback collection, secure data storage, and automatic report generation. However, it does not include integration with mobile devices or existing learning management platforms.
1.6 Definition of Terms
Evaluation: A systematic process of assessing the effectiveness or quality of teaching and learning activities.
Feedback: Information provided by students that reflects their experiences and satisfaction with a course.
Database: A digital system used to store, organize, and manage data efficiently.
1.7 Organization of the Project
The project is divided into five structured chapters for clarity and flow.
The first chapter introduces the study, highlighting its background, problem, and objectives.
In chapter two, related literature and previous studies are reviewed to provide theoretical context.
Chapter three discusses the methodology, system design, and technologies applied.
The fourth chapter presents system implementation, testing procedures, and results.
Finally, chapter five summarizes the entire research, draws conclusions, and provides recommendations for further development.
