The Impact of Health Insurance on Access to Quality Healthcare in Nigeria
CHAPTER ONE
INTRODUCTION
1.1 Background to the Study
Health insurance plays a vital role in ensuring that people receive quality healthcare without facing financial hardship. It provides a structured way for individuals to contribute small amounts regularly to access medical services when needed. Through this system, healthcare becomes more affordable and accessible to a larger portion of the population.
In Nigeria, access to quality healthcare remains a major challenge. Many citizens pay for medical services out of pocket, which often leads to financial strain, especially for low-income families. According to the World Health Organization (2023), over 60% of Nigerians face the risk of catastrophic health spending when seeking medical care. Health insurance helps reduce this burden by spreading the cost of healthcare across many contributors.
The Nigerian government introduced the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) in 2005 to improve healthcare access and promote universal health coverage. Despite this initiative, participation in health insurance remains low. Many citizens are unaware of its benefits, while others distrust the system due to inefficiency and poor service delivery (Adebayo, 2021). Private health insurance companies also face challenges such as limited coverage, inadequate regulation, and high administrative costs.
Health insurance contributes not only to affordability but also to the overall quality of healthcare. It enables hospitals to receive steady funding, which allows them to invest in better equipment, hire skilled professionals, and maintain service standards. As a result, insured individuals often experience better healthcare outcomes compared to those without insurance (Eze, 2022).
Therefore, understanding how health insurance influences access to quality healthcare in Nigeria is essential for improving public health policies and achieving the goal of universal health coverage.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Despite the introduction of various health insurance programs, many Nigerians still lack access to adequate healthcare. The high cost of medical treatment forces people to delay or avoid seeking care. Low awareness, poor infrastructure, and limited participation in insurance schemes continue to restrict the system’s effectiveness. In addition, some health insurance providers face issues such as delayed claims processing and poor service quality, which further discourage enrollment. These challenges undermine the potential of health insurance to improve access to healthcare in Nigeria.
1.3 Objectives of the Study
The main objective of this study is to examine the impact of health insurance on access to quality healthcare in Nigeria. The specific objectives are to:
-
Assess the level of awareness and participation in health insurance schemes in Nigeria.
-
Evaluate how health insurance influences access to affordable and quality healthcare services.
-
Identify the key challenges affecting the implementation and effectiveness of health insurance programs in Nigeria.
1.4 Research Questions
-
What is the level of awareness and participation in health insurance among Nigerians?
-
How does health insurance affect access to affordable and quality healthcare?
-
What challenges hinder the proper implementation of health insurance schemes in Nigeria?
1.5 Research Hypotheses
-
H₀₁: Health insurance has no significant impact on access to quality healthcare in Nigeria.
-
H₀₂: There is no significant relationship between health insurance participation and affordability of healthcare services.
1.6 Significance of the Study
This study is important to policymakers, healthcare providers, and citizens. For policymakers, it highlights areas where reforms are needed to strengthen the health insurance system. Healthcare providers will gain insights into how insurance participation affects service quality and hospital performance. For the public, the research demonstrates how insurance can protect households from financial hardship while improving access to care. The study also contributes to academic discussions on healthcare financing and public health management.
1.7 Scope of the Study
The study focuses on the relationship between health insurance and access to quality healthcare in Nigeria. It examines both public and private health insurance schemes and their influence on healthcare utilization. Data will be collected from selected hospitals, insurance companies, and policyholders across key urban centers such as Lagos, Abuja, and Kano.
1.8 Limitations of the Study
The study may face challenges such as limited data availability, respondents’ unwillingness to disclose personal information, and time constraints. However, these challenges will be addressed by using multiple data sources and ensuring that participants’ responses remain confidential.
1.9 Organization of the Study
The opening section presents the background, objectives, and significance of the study. The next part reviews relevant literature on health insurance and healthcare access. Following that, the research methodology and data collection procedures are discussed. The subsequent section presents the analysis and interpretation of findings. Finally, the last part summarizes the results, draws conclusions, and provides recommendations for improving health insurance and healthcare delivery in Nigeria.
