A Study of Unemployment and Youth Entrepreneurship Development in Nigeria
Chapter One
1.1 Background of the Study
Unemployment remains one of the biggest challenges facing Nigeria today. The country has a growing population and a youthful workforce. However, the number of available jobs continues to fall short of the demand. As a result, many young people struggle to find meaningful employment after graduation (Ogunleye, 2022).
Over the years, the government has introduced several programs to promote entrepreneurship. These include the National Directorate of Employment, the YouWin Initiative, and the N-Power scheme. Moreover, private institutions and NGOs have launched training programs to encourage self-employment. Despite these efforts, unemployment rates remain alarmingly high.
Entrepreneurship plays a vital role in economic development. It fosters innovation, creates jobs, and drives income generation. In addition, youth-led businesses help reduce poverty and promote local productivity. Yet, many young entrepreneurs face obstacles such as poor funding, inadequate training, and limited access to markets.
Furthermore, the absence of a strong entrepreneurial culture discourages creativity and risk-taking. Many graduates prefer white-collar jobs rather than starting their own ventures. Consequently, unemployment continues to rise even as more people join the labor force each year.
Therefore, understanding how entrepreneurship development can reduce youth unemployment is essential. Strengthening entrepreneurship could help Nigeria build a more inclusive and resilient economy.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
The rising level of youth unemployment has become alarming. Despite numerous government programs, most young people remain jobless. Moreover, lack of access to credit and mentorship hinders entrepreneurial success. Without targeted support, youth entrepreneurship cannot effectively address the unemployment crisis.
