The Effect of Influencer Marketing on Consumer Purchase Intentions among Nigerian Youths
CHAPTER ONE
1.1 Background to the Study
In recent years, social media has transformed the way businesses communicate with their customers. Platforms such as Instagram, TikTok, and YouTube have created new opportunities for brands to reach younger audiences through influencer marketing. Influencers are individuals who have built a strong online following and can shape the opinions, attitudes, and buying behavior of their audience (Kapoor & Dwivedi, 2022). Their recommendations often feel more authentic and trustworthy than traditional advertising.
In Nigeria, the growth of social media has been remarkable. A large portion of the youth population now spends several hours daily on digital platforms engaging with entertainment, lifestyle, and product content. This shift in media consumption has encouraged many companies to collaborate with influencers to promote products and services. According to Nwankwo and Onuoha (2021), influencer marketing has become a cost-effective and targeted promotional tool in emerging markets like Nigeria.
Despite its growing relevance, the effectiveness of influencer marketing on consumer purchase intentions remains a subject of interest. Many Nigerian youths admire influencers for their lifestyles, yet not all endorsements translate into actual purchases. Factors such as credibility, content quality, and brand-influencer alignment often determine how effective a campaign becomes. Understanding these dynamics is crucial for marketers who aim to convert brand awareness into sales among Nigeria’s tech-savvy youth.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Influencer marketing is increasingly popular among Nigerian brands, but its real impact on consumer buying decisions is not always clear. Some influencers prioritize financial gain over genuine product endorsement, which reduces trust among followers. In many cases, overexposure of similar promotional content has also led to ad fatigue, making consumers skeptical of influencer recommendations.
Furthermore, there is limited empirical research in Nigeria that evaluates how influencer credibility, audience engagement, and content authenticity affect consumer purchase intentions. As digital marketing budgets grow, companies need a deeper understanding of how influencer campaigns influence youths’ buying patterns. This study seeks to fill that gap by examining the effect of influencer marketing on consumer purchase intentions among Nigerian youths.

1.6 Significance of the Study
This research is significant because it provides insights into the growing influence of social media on marketing strategies in Nigeria. The findings will help marketers design more effective campaigns by identifying key factors that drive youth purchasing behavior. It will also guide influencers in maintaining authenticity and trustworthiness in their collaborations.
Additionally, the study contributes to academic literature by expanding the understanding of digital marketing in developing economies. Policymakers, advertising agencies, and entrepreneurs can use the results to strengthen ethical standards and improve consumer protection in online promotions.
1.7 Scope and Limitations of the Study
The study focuses on Nigerian youths aged between 18 and 35 years who actively use social media platforms such as Instagram, TikTok, and YouTube. It covers factors like influencer credibility, content quality, and audience interaction. The research is limited to Lagos, Abuja, and Port Harcourt due to high digital engagement levels in these areas.
Potential limitations may include response bias and difficulties in measuring subjective concepts like trust and intention. However, efforts will be made to minimize these limitations through careful questionnaire design and data analysis.
