1.1 Background to the Study
Artificial insemination (AI) is one of the most efficient and widely used reproductive technologies in modern livestock production. It enables farmers to use semen from genetically superior bulls to inseminate cows, which significantly improves breed quality, milk yield, and growth rate (FAO, 2021). In Nigeria, cattle rearing is a major component of agriculture and plays an essential role in ensuring food security, employment, and income generation. However, despite its importance, productivity in local cattle breeds remains low due to poor genetics, limited breeding programs, and inadequate management practices (Adebayo, 2020).
Over the years, the introduction of artificial insemination has created new opportunities for livestock development. Through AI, farmers can increase genetic diversity, reduce inbreeding, and enhance the overall productivity of their herds. Nevertheless, adoption among Nigerian farmers has remained limited. This is largely due to low awareness, poor access to veterinary services, and infrastructural challenges. Therefore, understanding the effect of AI on the genetic improvement of cattle is vital for promoting efficient breeding and sustainable livestock production.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Although artificial insemination offers numerous benefits, its impact on Nigeria’s cattle sector has not been fully realized. Many farmers still depend on natural mating, which often results in slow genetic progress and disease transmission. Moreover, inadequate training, unreliable semen distribution, and high operational costs discourage small-scale farmers from adopting AI (Nuru, 2021). Consequently, the productivity gap between Nigeria’s local cattle and improved breeds continues to widen. Hence, this study examines the effect of artificial insemination on the genetic improvement of cattle in Nigeria, emphasizing its challenges and opportunities.
1.3 Objectives of the Study
The main objective of this study is to assess the effect of artificial insemination on the genetic improvement of cattle in Nigeria.
The specific objectives are to:
