Audience Perception of Gender Representation in Television News
Chapter One
1.1 Background of the Study
Television has remained a powerful medium for shaping public opinion and social understanding. Beyond entertainment, it influences how people view gender roles and leadership abilities. Gender representation in television news, therefore, plays a key role in defining how viewers interpret men and women in society (Onah, 2020).
Over the years, men have occupied most decision-making and presentation positions in newsrooms. Women, in contrast, often appear less frequently or in limited roles. According to Ijeoma (2021), many female journalists are assigned to soft news areas such as lifestyle or entertainment, while their male colleagues handle politics, economy, and crime. This imbalance reflects deep-rooted gender stereotypes and affects how audiences perceive professionalism in journalism.
Moreover, gender bias in media coverage extends beyond staff assignments. The selection of interview subjects, framing of stories, and tone of delivery also influence how viewers interpret gender authority. When men dominate political and economic discussions on screen, audiences begin to associate leadership with masculinity. As a result, women may appear less visible in public discourse.
This study focuses on how viewers interpret these portrayals and whether they perceive fairness in gender representation on television. It also investigates whether balanced representation increases audience trust and engagement with news programs.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Despite the global call for gender equality, unequal representation persists in television news. Many stations still feature men more often as experts or anchors, while women appear less authoritative. This imbalance not only reinforces stereotypes but also limits the credibility of female journalists in the eyes of viewers. Hence, the study seeks to understand how audiences interpret gender roles and whether such portrayals influence their trust in the media.
1.3 Objectives of the Study
The main objective is to examine audience perception of gender representation in television news. The specific objectives are:
-
To identify how men and women are represented in television news.

1.5 Significance of the Study
This research highlights the importance of fair gender representation in broadcast journalism. It encourages media organizations to promote inclusion and equal visibility. Furthermore, it contributes to academic discussions on gender equality and media responsibility.
