An Investigation into the Role of Digital Media in Promoting Human Rights Advocacy in Nigeria
Chapter One
1.1 Background of the Study
Communication is a powerful tool for shaping public opinion and driving social change. In recent decades, digital media has transformed how individuals share information, express ideas, and advocate for human rights. Platforms such as Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and YouTube have given activists and ordinary citizens the ability to reach wide audiences quickly and effectively (Ibrahim, 2023).
Human rights advocacy relies on access to information and the ability to communicate freely. Traditionally, print and broadcast media were the main channels for promoting awareness. However, their limited reach and government control often restricted open discussion. With the rise of digital technology, citizens can now bypass these barriers and use online platforms to expose abuses, organize campaigns, and demand justice (Okoro & Okechukwu, 2021).
In Nigeria, digital media has played a growing role in civic engagement. Human rights groups, journalists, and young activists use social networks to mobilize people and hold authorities accountable. Campaigns such as #EndSARS, #BringBackOurGirls, and #JusticeForUwa demonstrate how digital platforms can draw attention to human rights violations and pressure leaders to act (Adesina, 2022).
Digital media allows advocates to share evidence through photos, videos, and live streams, which increases transparency. It also enables collaboration among civil society organizations and international bodies. These networks create a sense of solidarity that strengthens advocacy movements (Eze, 2023).
Despite these benefits, several challenges remain. Misinformation, online harassment, and government surveillance often threaten digital activism. Some activists face intimidation or censorship when their online activities challenge powerful interests. Furthermore, unequal access to the internet limits participation, especially among rural populations (Adebayo & Musa, 2021).
Understanding how digital media supports or hinders human rights advocacy in Nigeria is therefore essential. This study aims to investigate the ways digital platforms influence advocacy efforts, shape public opinion, and promote accountability in human rights issues.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Digital media provides new opportunities for promoting human rights, but its effectiveness in Nigeria remains unclear. While some campaigns have gained global recognition, others fail to create lasting impact. Limited internet access, poor digital literacy, and misinformation reduce the reach of advocacy efforts.
Furthermore, online activism often faces state suppression through restrictive laws or digital surveillance. Many activists struggle to sustain online campaigns due to resource constraints or fear of backlash. These issues raise critical questions about how digital media truly contributes to human rights advocacy in the Nigerian context.
This study seeks to identify how digital media platforms enhance advocacy, the challenges activists face, and the overall impact on human rights promotion.
