1.1 Background of the Study
Education has undergone rapid transformation due to technological advancements. The emergence of mobile technology has created new opportunities for learning beyond traditional classrooms. Mobile learning, commonly called m-learning, involves the use of mobile devices such as smartphones, tablets, and laptops to access educational materials and interact with learning resources anytime and anywhere (Traxler, 2018).
In recent years, mobile learning applications have gained significant popularity among students. These applications provide interactive lessons, video tutorials, quizzes, and collaborative tools that make learning more engaging. According to UNESCO (2023), mobile learning enhances access to education, particularly in developing countries where infrastructure and resources are limited.
In secondary schools, mobile applications such as Google Classroom, Duolingo, and Khan Academy have become vital tools for improving academic performance. They encourage self-paced learning, provide instant feedback, and promote students’ participation in the learning process (Adebayo & Fagbohun, 2021). As a result, students can learn at their own convenience, revise lessons repeatedly, and communicate easily with teachers and peers.
Despite these advantages, the effectiveness of mobile learning applications in improving academic performance remains a subject of debate. Some studies show that students who use educational apps perform better in tests and develop better study habits (Okonkwo, 2022). However, others report challenges such as distraction from social media, limited data access, and inadequate teacher supervision (Nwosu & Daniel, 2020).
In Nigeria, the integration of mobile learning in secondary education is growing but still uneven. Many schools in urban areas have adopted mobile applications, while those in rural regions lag behind due to poor connectivity and lack of digital devices. This digital divide has created differences in students’ learning experiences and outcomes (Owolabi & Ajayi, 2022).
Given this background, it becomes essential to assess the actual impact of mobile learning applications on students’ academic performance. Understanding how these tools influence learning outcomes will help educators and policymakers make informed decisions about their integration into secondary education.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Although mobile learning applications are increasingly used in Nigerian secondary schools, their effectiveness in enhancing academic performance is not fully established. Some teachers report positive learning outcomes, while others see no significant improvement. Many students use mobile apps inconsistently or for non-academic purposes, reducing their educational benefits.
Furthermore, inadequate training for teachers, poor internet access, and the high cost of mobile data hinder effective utilization of these applications. Without proper evaluation, it is difficult to determine whether mobile learning contributes meaningfully to improved academic results. This study therefore examines the impact of mobile learning applications on the academic performance of secondary school students.
1.3 Aim and Objectives of the Study

1.5 Significance of the Study
This study will contribute to knowledge on the role of educational technology in improving learning outcomes. The findings will help school administrators and policymakers understand how mobile learning can enhance teaching and learning. Teachers will also benefit by learning new strategies for integrating mobile applications into classroom instruction.
For students, the research will highlight effective ways of using mobile learning tools to improve study habits and performance. Additionally, technology developers and education ministries can use the results to design more effective educational apps and policies that support digital learning in secondary schools.
1.6 Scope of the Study
This study focuses on selected secondary schools within Lagos State, Nigeria. It examines the use of mobile learning applications among students and evaluates how they influence academic performance. The research is limited to mobile-based educational platforms such as Google Classroom, Edmodo, and Khan Academy.
It does not cover other digital tools such as computers or television-based learning systems.
