Influence of E-Learning Platforms on Students’ Academic Motivation in Higher Institutions
CHAPTER ONE
1.1 Background of the Study
Education is changing rapidly with the continuous growth of digital technology. The emergence of e-learning platforms has transformed how students access knowledge, interact with lecturers, and complete academic tasks. E-learning refers to the use of internet-based tools, software, and systems to facilitate teaching and learning outside traditional classroom settings (Allen & Seaman, 2019). In higher institutions, platforms such as Moodle, Google Classroom, Coursera, and Zoom have become popular for delivering lectures, sharing materials, and assessing students’ work.
These platforms provide flexibility, convenience, and accessibility, allowing students to learn at their own pace and from any location. According to UNESCO (2023), e-learning plays a vital role in making education more inclusive, especially for students who face challenges attending physical classes. Through interactive features such as discussion forums, multimedia content, and online quizzes, students can actively engage with learning materials and collaborate with peers and instructors.
Academic motivation is one of the key factors that influence learning success. Motivated students are more likely to participate in academic activities, complete assignments, and achieve better results. When students use e-learning platforms effectively, they often develop a sense of autonomy and responsibility for their learning (Ryan & Deci, 2020). These feelings can strengthen their intrinsic motivation, leading to improved performance.
In Nigeria, the adoption of e-learning in higher education increased significantly during and after the COVID-19 pandemic. Many universities introduced digital platforms to ensure continuous learning when physical classes were suspended. However, the impact of these platforms on students’ motivation has produced mixed results. While some students find online learning convenient and engaging, others struggle with distractions, lack of discipline, and limited interaction with lecturers (Okonkwo & Musa, 2022).
Furthermore, issues such as poor internet connectivity, inadequate digital skills, and the high cost of data continue to affect e-learning experiences. These factors can reduce students’ enthusiasm for online learning and weaken their motivation. Therefore, it is essential to investigate how e-learning platforms influence academic motivation among students in higher institutions. Understanding this relationship will help educators improve online learning strategies and support systems.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Although e-learning platforms have become common in higher institutions, their effect on students’ academic motivation is still uncertain. Many students use these platforms inconsistently or only when required to do so. Some enjoy the flexibility of learning online, while others feel isolated or unmotivated due to limited face-to-face interaction.
Technical problems, poor digital literacy, and inadequate feedback from lecturers also discourage students from active participation. As a result, some students experience a decline in motivation and engagement. There is a need to examine whether e-learning platforms truly enhance or hinder students’ academic motivation in higher institutions.
1.3 Aim and Objectives of the Study
Aim:
To investigate the influence of e-learning platforms on students’ academic motivation in higher institutions.
Objectives:
-
To identify the types of e-learning platforms commonly used in higher institutions.
-
To examine how e-learning platforms affect students’ academic motivation.
-
To determine students’ attitudes toward the use of e-learning platforms.
-
To identify the challenges students face while using e-learning platforms.
1.4 Research Questions
-
What types of e-learning platforms are used in higher institutions?
-
How do e-learning platforms influence students’ academic motivation?
-
What are students’ attitudes toward the use of e-learning platforms?
-
What challenges do students encounter while using these platforms?
1.5 Significance of the Study
This study will provide valuable insight into the relationship between e-learning platforms and students’ motivation to learn. The findings will help lecturers understand how to design online lessons that promote engagement and interest. For higher institution administrators, the study will highlight the need for effective support systems such as digital literacy training and improved internet infrastructure.
Policymakers can also use the results to develop guidelines for sustainable e-learning in Nigerian universities. The study will contribute to the growing body of knowledge on technology-enhanced education and guide future research on improving online learning experiences. Additionally, students will benefit by understanding how to use e-learning platforms more effectively to stay motivated and achieve better academic results.
1.6 Scope of the Study
The study focuses on selected higher institutions in Lagos State, Nigeria. It examines the use of e-learning platforms among undergraduate students and their influence on academic motivation. The study considers popular platforms such as Moodle, Google Classroom, and Zoom. It does not cover other digital technologies like virtual reality or augmented learning systems.
