The Effect of Peer Discussion on Students’ Performance in English Language
CHAPTER ONE: INTRODUCTION
1.1 Background of the Study
Collaborative learning is a key strategy in education. Peer discussion, a form of collaborative learning, allows students to share ideas, ask questions, and clarify concepts. In English language classes, peer discussion can enhance comprehension, vocabulary, grammar, and writing skills (Johnson & Johnson, 2009).
Peer discussion encourages active engagement. Students learn by explaining ideas to others, listening, and negotiating meaning. This interaction fosters deeper understanding compared to passive learning. Moreover, peer discussions build confidence in using English for communication. When students practice speaking and writing collaboratively, they become more proficient in expressing themselves clearly (Slavin, 2014).
In Nigeria, teachers often face large class sizes, making individual attention challenging. Peer discussion offers a practical approach to improve learning outcomes. By examining the effect of peer discussion on students’ performance, educators can adopt strategies that strengthen English language proficiency while promoting active learning.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Despite the potential benefits, many students still struggle with English language skills. Teachers report low performance in grammar, vocabulary, and written expression. Traditional teaching methods alone may not be sufficient to address these gaps. Additionally, there is limited research on how peer discussion directly influences performance in English classes. This study seeks to investigate the effectiveness of peer discussion in enhancing students’ learning outcomes.
1.3 Objectives of the Study
The main objective of this study is to examine the effect of peer discussion on students’ performance in English language.
The specific objectives are to:
-
Determine how peer discussion affects students’ comprehension of English language concepts.
-
Assess the impact of peer discussion on students’ writing and speaking skills.
-
Evaluate students’ engagement and motivation during peer discussion activities.
-
Suggest strategies to implement peer discussion effectively in English language teaching.
1.4 Research Questions
The study seeks to answer the following questions:
-
How does peer discussion affect students’ understanding of English language concepts?
-
What is the impact of peer discussion on students’ writing and speaking skills?
-
How does peer discussion influence student engagement and motivation?
-
What strategies can enhance the effectiveness of peer discussion in English classes?
1.5 Significance of the Study
This study benefits students, teachers, curriculum planners, and researchers. Students will develop better understanding and skills through collaborative learning. Teachers can implement peer discussion as a tool to improve performance. Curriculum planners may integrate peer discussion activities into lesson plans. Researchers will gain insights into the role of interactive learning strategies in language education.
1.6 Scope of the Study
The study focuses on secondary school students in Nigeria. It examines the effect of peer discussion on comprehension, writing, and speaking skills in English language. The study does not cover other subjects or students at tertiary levels. It is limited to structured peer discussion activities conducted in classrooms.
1.7 Operational Definition of Terms
Peer Discussion: Interactive learning in which students share ideas, ask questions, and solve problems collaboratively.
English Language Performance: Students’ achievement in comprehension, writing, and speaking tasks.
Engagement: The level of active participation and interest of students in discussions.
Comprehension: The ability to understand and interpret English language concepts correctly.
