The Influence of English Language Newspapers on Students’ Reading Skills
CHAPTER ONE: INTRODUCTION
1.1 Background of the Study
Reading is a vital skill for academic success and personal development. In English language learning, newspapers provide authentic content that exposes students to diverse vocabulary, sentence structures, and writing styles. By engaging with newspapers, students can improve comprehension, analytical skills, and awareness of current affairs (Purves, 2004).
Newspapers combine informative and persuasive language, which challenges students to interpret, summarize, and evaluate content. Furthermore, reading newspapers regularly develops reading speed, critical thinking, and contextual understanding. Studies suggest that students who read newspapers consistently perform better in reading comprehension tests than those who rely solely on textbooks (Krashen, 2004).
In Nigeria, many students have limited exposure to English newspapers. The reliance on textbooks and online entertainment content may reduce their opportunities to practice authentic reading. Therefore, examining the influence of newspapers on reading skills can provide insights into strategies that improve students’ English literacy.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Despite the availability of English newspapers, many students struggle with reading comprehension, vocabulary, and text interpretation. Teachers report that students often fail to understand news articles, editorials, and reports. Limited engagement with newspapers and reliance on less formal reading materials may contribute to these challenges. Moreover, research on the effect of newspapers on students’ reading skills in Nigeria is scarce. This study seeks to investigate how English language newspapers influence reading skills.
1.3 Objectives of the Study
The main objective of this study is to examine the influence of English language newspapers on students’ reading skills.
The specific objectives are to:
-
Identify how frequently students read English newspapers.
-
Assess the effect of newspaper reading on vocabulary and comprehension.
-
Examine students’ attitudes and engagement toward reading newspapers.
-
Recommend strategies to encourage newspaper reading for improved literacy.
1.4 Research Questions
The study seeks to answer the following questions:
-
How often do students read English newspapers?
-
How does reading newspapers affect students’ vocabulary and comprehension?
-
What are students’ attitudes and engagement levels toward reading newspapers?
-
What strategies can promote newspaper reading among students?
1.5 Significance of the Study
This study benefits students, teachers, curriculum planners, and researchers. Students will understand how newspapers can enhance their reading skills and vocabulary. Teachers can encourage newspaper reading as part of classroom activities. Curriculum planners may design programs that integrate authentic reading materials into English lessons. Researchers will gain insights into strategies that promote literacy and active reading habits.
1.6 Scope of the Study
The study focuses on secondary school students in Nigeria. It examines the impact of English newspapers on reading skills, including comprehension, vocabulary, and critical thinking. The research does not cover primary schools or tertiary institutions. It also excludes other reading materials such as magazines or online blogs.
