1.1 Background of the Study
Sorghum (Sorghum bicolor) is an important cereal crop in Nigeria, serving as a staple food for millions and a source of livestock feed. It is highly valued for its drought tolerance and adaptability to marginal soils. Despite its importance, sorghum productivity remains low due to pests, diseases, poor soil fertility, and the use of low-yielding traditional seed varieties (FAO, 2022).
Improved seed varieties have been developed to enhance crop yield, resist pests and diseases, and tolerate adverse environmental conditions. These seeds are genetically superior to traditional varieties, producing higher yield, better grain quality, and faster maturity (Akinwale & Adepoju, 2019). Farmers who adopt improved seeds can increase productivity, reduce the need for chemical inputs, and enhance food security.
However, many smallholder farmers in Nigeria still rely on local seeds due to limited awareness, high costs, or lack of access to improved seed distribution channels. This limits the potential benefits of modern agricultural research. Promoting the use of improved seed varieties is therefore critical to boosting sorghum production and ensuring food security.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Although improved seed varieties are available, their adoption among Nigerian farmers is low. Many farmers continue to plant traditional seeds that produce lower yields and are more susceptible to pests and diseases. Limited access to improved seeds, insufficient training, and high costs hinder adoption. Consequently, sorghum production remains below its potential, affecting household income and food security. This study seeks to investigate the role of improved seed varieties in enhancing sorghum productivity in Nigeria.

The main objective of this study is to assess the role of improved seed varieties in enhancing sorghum production in Nigeria.

1.5 Significance of the Study

1.6 Scope of the Study
The study focuses on sorghum farms in selected Nigerian states where the crop is widely cultivated, including Kano, Sokoto, and Bauchi States. It will assess the yield performance of improved versus traditional seeds and examine the factors affecting adoption among smallholder farmers.
1.7 Definition of Key Terms
Improved Seed Varieties: Seeds developed through research to produce higher yield, resist pests and diseases, and tolerate environmental stresses.
Sorghum Yield: The total quantity of sorghum harvested per unit area of farmland.
Adoption: The process of farmers accepting and using new agricultural technologies or practices.
Smallholder Farmers: Farmers who cultivate small plots of land and rely mainly on family labor.
1.8 Organization of the Study
The study is organized into five chapters. Chapter One introduces the research and outlines the background, problem, objectives, and research questions.Β Reviews of literature on sorghum production, seed technology, and adoption challenges are presented in Chapter Two. Chapter Three explains the methodology. Chapter Four presents data analysis and findings, while Chapter Five concludes the study and provides recommendations for promoting improved sorghum seed adoption.
