The Influence of Library User Education on Information Retrieval Skills Among Undergraduate Students in the University of Ibadan
Chapter One
1.1 Background of the Study
University libraries play an important role in supporting teaching, learning and research. They provide access to information resources that help students grow academically. However, students often struggle when they try to locate these resources. Many of them lack the basic skills needed to search for information in an effective way. As a result, libraries introduce user education to guide students and improve their ability to use library tools and services (Aina, 2019).
User education helps students understand how to use catalogues, online databases and reference services. It also teaches them how to evaluate information sources. When students gain these skills, they retrieve information faster and with more accuracy. Therefore, user education increases their confidence and improves their academic performance (Fawole, 2020).
The University of Ibadan library system offers several user education programmes. These programmes include orientation activities, database tutorials and guided library tours. Even though these programmes exist, many students still face difficulties when they search for information. This situation raises important questions about the real influence of user education on students’ retrieval skills. Because of this concern, the need to investigate the effectiveness of these programmes becomes important.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Many undergraduate students enter the university with little experience in information searching. They often depend on guesswork and random browsing when they need academic resources. This usually leads to frustration. It also affects their academic work because they spend too much time searching for the right information. Although the University of Ibadan provides user education, the level of improvement among students remains unclear.
Some students still cannot use the library catalogue. Others avoid electronic databases because they do not understand how they work. These challenges suggest that user education may not fully address students’ needs. Therefore, this study seeks to examine how user education influences the information retrieval skills of undergraduate students in the University of Ibadan.
1.3 Objectives of the Study
The main objective of this study is to investigate the influence of library user education on the information retrieval skills of undergraduate students in the University of Ibadan.
The specific objectives are to
-
examine the type of user education programmes available for undergraduate students
-
determine the level of students’ information retrieval skills
-
assess the influence of user education on students’ ability to retrieve information
-
identify the challenges students face when using library resources
1.4 Research Questions
This study seeks to answer the following questions
-
What types of user education programmes are available for undergraduate students
-
What is the level of students’ information retrieval skills
-
How does user education influence students’ ability to retrieve information
-
What challenges do students face when they try to use library resources
1.5 Significance of the Study
This study is important because it helps librarians understand how well user education prepares students for academic research. The findings will guide the library in improving its teaching methods. They will also help lecturers encourage students to take user education seriously. In addition, the study will provide useful information for curriculum planners who want to strengthen information literacy training.
Finally, the study will benefit students. It will show them why user education matters and how they can use it to develop strong research skills.
1.6 Scope of the Study
This study focuses on undergraduate students in the University of Ibadan. It examines the user education programmes available in the university library. It also assesses how these programmes influence students’ information retrieval skills. The study does not cover postgraduate students or other institutions.
