Challenges in Managing Institutional Repositories: A Case Study of Ahmadu Bello University Zaria
Chapter One
1.1 Background of the Study
Institutional repositories are digital platforms that store and preserve the intellectual output of an institution. They provide access to theses, dissertations, research papers, and other academic materials. Institutional repositories ensure that research is available to both internal and external users, supporting knowledge sharing and scholarly communication (Aina, 2019).
Ahmadu Bello University Zaria has developed an institutional repository to manage its research outputs. The repository allows faculty, staff, and students to upload and access academic work. It also helps preserve research materials for long-term use. However, managing such repositories requires technical expertise, adequate infrastructure, and effective policies (Nwalo, 2020).
Despite these provisions, some challenges affect the efficiency of institutional repositories. Technical problems, low user awareness, inadequate staffing, and limited funding can hinder repository management. Understanding these challenges is essential for improving access, usability, and long-term preservation of research outputs.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Although institutional repositories provide significant benefits, many face management challenges. At Ahmadu Bello University, some research materials are not uploaded in time. Users may encounter difficulties navigating the repository. Technical issues, such as server downtime and software glitches, further reduce effectiveness. Additionally, limited staff training and awareness campaigns affect the overall performance of the repository.
These problems limit the full potential of institutional repositories. They may prevent research outputs from reaching a wider audience. Therefore, it is necessary to investigate the challenges in managing institutional repositories at Ahmadu Bello University Zaria.
