The Role of Public Libraries in Promoting Lifelong Learning: A Study of Kaduna State Library Board
Chapter One
1.1 Background of the Study
Lifelong learning is the ongoing pursuit of knowledge for personal or professional development. Public libraries provide access to information and learning materials that support this goal. They offer books, digital resources, workshops, and community programmes that help individuals acquire new skills and knowledge at all stages of life (Aina, 2019).
In Kaduna State, public libraries play an important role in promoting lifelong learning. They provide reading materials for children, adults, and the elderly. They also host training sessions and seminars to enhance knowledge and skills. By offering these services, public libraries contribute to community development and personal growth (Fawole, 2020).
Despite these efforts, the extent to which public libraries promote lifelong learning is not fully documented. Some communities may not fully benefit from library services due to low awareness or limited access. Therefore, studying the role of public libraries in Kaduna State helps highlight their contribution to lifelong learning and identifies areas for improvement.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Many residents in Kaduna State face challenges in accessing information for lifelong learning. Limited library infrastructure, insufficient resources, and low community awareness reduce the effectiveness of public libraries. Some residents are unaware of available programmes, while others struggle with library policies or opening hours.
These challenges may prevent public libraries from fully supporting lifelong learning. Understanding the role of public libraries and the barriers they face is essential to improve services and maximize their impact on the community.
1.3 Objectives of the Study
The main objective of this study is to examine the role of public libraries in promoting lifelong learning in Kaduna State.
The specific objectives are to
-
identify the programmes and services public libraries offer for lifelong learning
-
assess how these services contribute to skill and knowledge acquisition
-
examine challenges that limit the effectiveness of public libraries
-
suggest strategies to enhance the role of public libraries in lifelong learning

-
What programmes and services do public libraries offer for lifelong learning
-
How do these services contribute to skill and knowledge acquisition
-
What challenges limit the effectiveness of public libraries
-
What strategies can enhance the role of public libraries in promoting lifelong learning
