Accessibility of Library Resources to Students with Disabilities in Obafemi Awolowo University Library
Chapter One
1.1 Background of the Study
Access to information is a fundamental right for all students, including those with disabilities. Libraries play an important role in providing materials and services that meet the needs of every student. Accessibility ensures that students with physical, visual, or hearing impairments can use library resources effectively (Aina, 2019).
Obafemi Awolowo University Library has made efforts to provide accessible resources. These include electronic materials, braille books, audio resources, and assistive technologies. Additionally, librarians offer guidance on using these resources to support academic success (Fawole, 2020). Despite these measures, challenges such as limited materials, inadequate training, and lack of awareness may affect accessibility.
Studying accessibility helps identify gaps and improve library services. It also ensures that students with disabilities can participate fully in academic activities. Understanding the current state of accessibility in the library is essential to promote equity and inclusion.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Students with disabilities often face difficulties accessing library resources. Some materials are not available in accessible formats. Assistive technologies may be limited, and staff may not have sufficient training to support these students effectively. Consequently, students with disabilities may struggle to complete assignments, conduct research, or engage with academic content fully.
Although Obafemi Awolowo University Library provides some resources for students with disabilities, there is limited information on the effectiveness and accessibility of these services. This study aims to evaluate how accessible the library resources are and identify challenges faced by students with disabilities.
