The Use of Mobile Libraries to Promote Reading Culture in Rural Communities: A Case Study of Enugu State
Chapter One
1.1 Background of the Study
Reading culture is essential for education and lifelong learning. However, access to library resources in rural communities is often limited. Mobile libraries provide an innovative solution by delivering books and learning materials to these communities (Aina, 2019). They help bridge the gap between urban and rural education.
Mobile libraries are equipped with books, audiovisual materials, and sometimes digital resources. Librarians travel to rural areas to provide access to these resources. Users can borrow, read, and learn without visiting a physical library. This approach improves literacy and fosters a love for reading among children and adults (Fawole, 2020).
Enugu State has implemented mobile library services to reach underserved communities. Despite these efforts, challenges such as poor road networks, limited funding, and low community awareness may affect the effectiveness of mobile libraries. Studying this service will help identify strategies to promote reading culture and improve service delivery in rural areas.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Rural communities often have limited access to books and library services. Many residents do not develop strong reading habits due to lack of resources. Mobile libraries have been introduced, but their reach and impact remain uncertain. Challenges such as poor infrastructure, limited materials, and irregular schedules reduce effectiveness. Evaluating the use of mobile libraries is necessary to determine how well they promote reading culture.
1.3 Objectives of the Study
The main objective of this study is to examine the use of mobile libraries to promote reading culture in rural communities in Enugu State.
The specific objectives are to
-
identify the services offered by mobile libraries in rural communities
-
assess the impact of mobile libraries on reading habits
-
examine challenges faced in operating mobile libraries
-
suggest strategies to enhance the effectiveness of mobile libraries
1.4 Research Questions
The study seeks to answer the following questions
-
What services do mobile libraries provide in rural communities
-
How do mobile libraries impact reading habits among residents
-
What challenges are faced in operating mobile libraries
-
What strategies can improve the effectiveness of mobile libraries
1.5 Significance of the Study
This study will provide insights for library administrators and policymakers on improving mobile library services. Residents will benefit by gaining access to books and learning materials, which can enhance literacy and educational outcomes. The study will also contribute to academic literature on innovative library services in Nigeria.
1.6 Scope of the Study
This study focuses on mobile libraries in rural communities in Enugu State. It examines the services provided, their impact on reading habits, and the challenges faced. The study does not cover urban libraries or non-mobile library services.
