The Effect of Library Orientation Programmes on Students’ Use of Library Resources in University of Benin
Chapter One
1.1 Background of the Study
Library orientation programmes introduce students to library resources and services. They teach users how to locate materials, use catalogues, access databases, and follow borrowing procedures. Effective orientation improves students’ ability to use library resources efficiently and enhances academic performance (Aina, 2019).
At the University of Benin, library orientation programmes are organized at the beginning of each academic session. Librarians guide students through the library layout, online resources, and library rules. These programmes aim to make students familiar with the resources available and reduce difficulties in accessing information (Fawole, 2020).
Despite these programmes, some students still face challenges in using library resources. They may not understand how to navigate the catalogues, access e-resources, or retrieve relevant materials. Evaluating the effectiveness of library orientation programmes helps identify strengths and areas for improvement in supporting students’ research and learning.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Students often struggle to use library resources effectively, especially at the start of their academic programs. Some may be unaware of available services or face difficulties accessing print and electronic materials. While library orientation programmes exist, there is limited evidence on their impact on students’ use of resources. This lack of evaluation makes it difficult to enhance orientation activities and ensure optimal library use.
1.3 Objectives of the Study
The main objective of this study is to assess the effect of library orientation programmes on students’ use of library resources in University of Benin.
The specific objectives are to
-
identify the components of library orientation programmes
-
assess students’ understanding of library resources after orientation
-
examine how orientation programmes affect students’ use of library materials
-
suggest measures to improve library orientation effectiveness
1.4 Research Questions
The study seeks to answer the following questions
-
What are the components of library orientation programmes in University of Benin
-
How well do students understand library resources after orientation
-
How do orientation programmes affect students’ use of library materials
-
What measures can improve the effectiveness of library orientation programmes
1.5 Significance of the Study
This study will help librarians understand the effectiveness of library orientation programmes. Findings will guide improvements in programme design, teaching methods, and resource demonstration. Students will benefit by gaining better skills in accessing and using library resources efficiently. The study will also contribute to research on library user education and student learning in Nigerian universities.
1.6 Scope of the Study
This study focuses on students participating in library orientation programmes at the University of Benin. It examines programme components, students’ understanding, and the effect on resource usage. The study does not cover students in other universities or those not participating in orientation programmes.
1.7 Definition of Key Terms
Library Orientation Programmes are structured sessions designed to introduce students to library resources, services, and policies.
Library Resources include print and electronic materials available for study and research.
Resource Usage refers to the ability of students to access and use library materials effectively.
Student Understanding refers to the knowledge gained from orientation programmes about library functions and resources.
