The Impact of Information Literacy on Students’ Academic Performance in Obafemi Awolowo University Library
Chapter One
1.1 Background of the Study
Information literacy is the ability to locate, evaluate, and use information effectively. It is essential for academic success. Students with strong information literacy skills can access relevant resources, conduct research, and complete assignments efficiently (Aina, 2019).
Obafemi Awolowo University Library provides training and support to develop information literacy. Workshops, seminars, and online tutorials help students learn to navigate databases, evaluate sources, and cite information correctly (Fawole, 2020). Effective information literacy ensures students can perform well academically and produce high-quality research.
Despite these initiatives, some students still struggle to find and use information effectively. Lack of awareness, limited training, and difficulty evaluating sources can reduce academic performance. Studying the impact of information literacy helps understand its importance and guides improvements in library instruction.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Many students face challenges in accessing and using information effectively. Some lack the skills to evaluate sources critically or locate relevant materials. This deficiency can negatively affect academic performance, research quality, and assignment completion. Although the library offers information literacy programmes, their impact on student performance has not been fully assessed. Therefore, this study investigates the relationship between information literacy and academic performance.
