Knowledge Management Practices in University Libraries: A Study of University of Lagos
Chapter One
1.1 Background of the Study
Knowledge management (KM) is the systematic process of capturing, organizing, storing, and sharing knowledge to enhance performance and decision-making. In university libraries, KM ensures that information resources are effectively managed and accessible to students, researchers, and faculty members (Aina, 2019). University libraries are centers for knowledge creation, storage, and dissemination. Implementing effective KM practices helps libraries provide timely, relevant, and accurate information to users.
University libraries in Nigeria face increasing demands for efficient knowledge organization. The University of Lagos Library, as one of the leading academic libraries, manages vast collections of print and digital resources. These include books, journals, theses, dissertations, research reports, and digital databases. Efficient knowledge management ensures that these resources are easily retrievable and usable by library patrons (Fawole, 2020).
KM practices in libraries involve cataloguing, classification, archiving, digitization, and the use of information systems. Digital platforms such as integrated library management systems (ILMS) and electronic databases facilitate KM by enabling easy search and retrieval of resources. Librarians play a critical role in organizing knowledge, training users, and providing reference services that improve information access (Ajiboye & Olojede, 2018).
Despite the benefits of KM, challenges persist in university libraries. Libraries may struggle with outdated cataloguing systems, inadequate staff training, or limited digital infrastructure. These challenges can reduce the efficiency of KM practices and limit users’ ability to access and apply knowledge. Understanding KM practices in university libraries helps identify strengths, weaknesses, and opportunities for improvement, which can enhance academic outcomes and research productivity.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
University libraries face challenges in managing the vast and growing body of knowledge. Inefficient cataloguing, poor digital infrastructure, and inconsistent information sharing can hinder access to critical resources. Users may struggle to locate information, leading to delays in completing assignments or conducting research. Additionally, some librarians may lack training in advanced KM practices, limiting the library’s effectiveness in supporting users (Nwalo, 2020).
At the University of Lagos, the management of both print and digital resources requires systematic KM practices. Without efficient KM, valuable information may remain underutilized, and students may not achieve optimal academic performance. Furthermore, libraries may not be able to fully support faculty and researchers in accessing the knowledge needed for teaching and research. This study aims to assess KM practices in the University of Lagos Library and determine their impact on information access and utilization.
1.3 Objectives of the Study
The main objective of this study is to examine knowledge management practices in university libraries and their effect on information access and utilization at the University of Lagos.
The specific objectives are to
-
identify the knowledge management practices employed in the University of Lagos Library
-
assess how these practices facilitate information retrieval and sharing among students and staff
-
examine challenges affecting effective knowledge management in the library
-
suggest strategies to improve knowledge management practices in university libraries
1.4 Research Questions
The study seeks to answer the following questions
-
What knowledge management practices are employed in the University of Lagos Library
-
How do these practices facilitate information retrieval and sharing among students and staff
-
What challenges affect effective knowledge management in the library
-
What strategies can improve knowledge management practices in university libraries
1.5 Significance of the Study
This study is significant for students, librarians, and university administrators. For students, understanding KM practices can improve their ability to access and use information effectively. This can enhance research skills, assignment completion, and overall academic performance.
For librarians, the study highlights areas of strength and weakness in KM practices. Insights from the study can guide training programs, adoption of digital tools, and development of more effective systems for organizing and sharing knowledge. Librarians can also improve services such as reference assistance, database management, and resource retrieval.
University administrators will benefit by understanding the importance of investing in KM infrastructure and staff development. Effective KM practices can enhance the overall quality of education, support research productivity, and improve library services. Additionally, the study contributes to literature on knowledge management in Nigerian academic libraries, providing a foundation for future research.
1.6 Scope of the Study
This study focuses on knowledge management practices in the University of Lagos Library. It examines the processes of organizing, storing, and sharing knowledge, as well as challenges and strategies for improvement. The study is limited to undergraduate and postgraduate students, academic staff, and library personnel within the university. Other universities and non-academic libraries are not included in this study. The study also focuses on both print and digital knowledge resources within the library.
