Challenges of Preserving Rare Manuscripts in Nigerian University Libraries
Chapter One
1.1 Background of the Study
Rare manuscripts are unique or historical documents that hold significant academic, cultural, and historical value. They may include handwritten books, archival records, ancient scripts, and original research papers. Preserving these materials is essential to safeguard knowledge for future generations (Aina, 2019). University libraries play a crucial role in maintaining these manuscripts, providing access to researchers and supporting academic scholarship.
In Nigeria, university libraries such as those in University of Ibadan, Obafemi Awolowo University, and Ahmadu Bello University house collections of rare manuscripts. These documents are valuable resources for research in history, literature, anthropology, and other fields. Proper preservation ensures that manuscripts remain intact, legible, and accessible over time (Fawole, 2020).
Preservation involves processes such as conservation, digitization, cataloguing, and secure storage. Digitization has become an important tool in preserving rare manuscripts, allowing libraries to create electronic copies while reducing physical handling of fragile materials. Libraries also employ climate-controlled storage, acid-free paper, and archival-quality containers to prevent deterioration.
Despite these measures, preserving rare manuscripts in Nigerian university libraries presents challenges. Factors such as poor infrastructure, inadequate funding, insufficient training of staff, and environmental conditions such as humidity and pests can damage manuscripts. Limited awareness of preservation techniques among library staff and students can also affect the longevity and usability of these resources (Nwalo, 2020).
Understanding the challenges of preserving rare manuscripts is vital for developing effective strategies. It ensures that valuable historical and academic materials are protected, supports research and learning, and promotes the cultural heritage of Nigeria.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
University libraries in Nigeria face numerous obstacles in preserving rare manuscripts. Some libraries lack proper storage facilities, leading to exposure to heat, humidity, and pests. Others may have limited digitization capabilities, resulting in frequent physical handling of delicate materials. Insufficient funding often prevents libraries from acquiring necessary preservation equipment or training staff in modern conservation methods.
These challenges limit access to rare manuscripts and may cause permanent damage to invaluable documents. Researchers may struggle to find usable copies, and academic work may be hindered by the deterioration of essential resources. Despite the cultural and educational significance of rare manuscripts, there is limited research on the challenges of their preservation in Nigerian university libraries. This study aims to examine these challenges and recommend strategies to improve preservation practices.
1.3 Objectives of the Study
The main objective of this study is to investigate the challenges of preserving rare manuscripts in Nigerian university libraries.
The specific objectives are to
-
identify the types of rare manuscripts available in Nigerian university libraries
-
examine the preservation techniques currently employed
-
assess the challenges affecting effective preservation of manuscripts
-
recommend strategies to enhance the preservation of rare manuscripts in university libraries
1.4 Research Questions
The study seeks to answer the following questions
-
What types of rare manuscripts are available in Nigerian university libraries
-
What preservation techniques are currently used in these libraries
-
What challenges affect the effective preservation of rare manuscripts
-
What strategies can improve the preservation of rare manuscripts in university libraries
1.5 Significance of the Study
This study is significant for students, researchers, librarians, and university administrators. For students and researchers, understanding preservation challenges helps ensure access to reliable and usable resources for academic work. They can learn to handle rare manuscripts appropriately and utilize digitized versions for research.
For librarians, the study highlights gaps in current preservation practices. It provides insights into areas requiring improvement, such as staff training, infrastructure, and adoption of modern preservation techniques. Librarians can implement better storage, handling, and digitization practices to safeguard valuable manuscripts.
University administrators will benefit by understanding the importance of investing in preservation facilities, equipment, and staff development. Proper preservation of rare manuscripts supports research productivity, cultural heritage, and academic excellence. The study also contributes to the academic literature on library preservation practices in Nigeria, providing a foundation for future research.
1.6 Scope of the Study
This study focuses on the challenges of preserving rare manuscripts in selected Nigerian university libraries. It examines the types of manuscripts, preservation techniques, and obstacles affecting effective preservation. The study targets library staff and management involved in preservation activities. Students and researchers who use these manuscripts are also considered. The study does not cover rare manuscripts in private collections or non-academic libraries. Digitization and traditional conservation methods are included, while other archival materials outside the university libraries are excluded.
1.7 Definition of Key Terms
