1.1 Background of the Study
Information literacy refers to the ability to locate, evaluate, and use information effectively. It is a fundamental skill for academic success in tertiary institutions. Library staff play a critical role in promoting information literacy among students and faculty by guiding them in accessing, evaluating, and applying information from various sources (Aina, 2019).
In Nigerian universities, library staff organize training sessions, workshops, and orientation programs to enhance information literacy. They teach students how to search databases, use e-resources, evaluate sources for credibility, and cite references properly (Fawole, 2020). By providing these services, librarians help students become independent learners capable of conducting research efficiently.
The role of library staff goes beyond teaching basic skills. They assist students in navigating digital libraries, accessing e-books, and using online journals. They also provide reference services, helping students identify reliable sources for assignments and research projects. Effective library staff support academic excellence by ensuring students can access the information they need when they need it (Ajiboye & Olojede, 2018).
Despite the efforts of library staff, many students still struggle with information literacy. Factors such as large student populations, limited staff numbers, and inadequate training facilities can affect the effectiveness of information literacy programs. Understanding the role of library staff in promoting information literacy helps institutions improve services, enhance academic outcomes, and equip students with essential skills for lifelong learning.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Although library staff conduct information literacy programs, some students fail to utilize available resources effectively. Limited awareness of programs, insufficient hands-on training, and lack of personalized support contribute to this problem. Additionally, understaffing and high student-to-librarian ratios may reduce the quality of guidance provided (Nwalo, 2020).
Some library staff may also lack training in modern information literacy techniques, particularly for digital resources. Without up-to-date skills, staff may not effectively support students in navigating online databases, digital libraries, or open educational resources. This study seeks to examine how library staff promote information literacy in tertiary institutions and to identify strategies to enhance their effectiveness.

The main objective of this study is to investigate the role of library staff in promoting information literacy in tertiary institutions.

1.6 Scope of the Study
This study focuses on the role of library staff in promoting information literacy in selected Nigerian tertiary institutions. It examines the programs provided, their effectiveness, challenges faced, and strategies for improvement. The study targets undergraduate and postgraduate students, as well as library staff responsible for information literacy initiatives. Other educational institutions, such as secondary schools or non-academic libraries, are excluded from this study. Both traditional and digital information literacy programs are included.
