Students’ Awareness and Utilization of Online Databases in University Libraries

1.1 Background of the Study

Online databases are digital platforms that provide access to scholarly journals, e-books, conference proceedings, theses, and other academic resources. They are essential in university libraries, as they allow students to conduct research efficiently, access up-to-date information, and support learning and academic performance (Aina, 2019). Unlike traditional print resources, online databases offer advanced search capabilities, instant access, and remote availability.

University libraries in Nigeria, such as those in University of Lagos, Obafemi Awolowo University, and Covenant University, subscribe to various online databases including JSTOR, ScienceDirect, and EBSCOhost. These platforms provide students with access to peer-reviewed articles and other scholarly publications necessary for assignments, research projects, and thesis writing (Fawole, 2020).

Effective utilization of online databases requires awareness and training. Students must know which databases are available, understand search techniques, and learn how to evaluate the credibility of sources. Library staff play a crucial role in guiding students, offering workshops, tutorials, and one-on-one assistance to improve database usage (Ajiboye & Olojede, 2018).

Despite the availability of online databases, challenges such as low awareness, limited training, poor internet connectivity, and lack of familiarity with search tools can limit their utilization. Some students rely primarily on printed resources or general internet searches, which may reduce the quality and credibility of their research. Understanding students’ awareness and utilization patterns is essential to improve academic research outcomes.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

Although online databases are available in Nigerian university libraries, many students do not fully utilize them. Limited awareness of the databases, inadequate digital literacy, poor access to internet-enabled devices, and insufficient training reduce effective usage. This affects students’ ability to find relevant and credible information for their academic work (Nwalo, 2020).

Library staff may also face challenges in reaching all students due to large class sizes or limited personnel. Some students may prefer free online sources, which are not always reliable, instead of subscribing to credible databases provided by the library. These factors highlight the need to assess students’ awareness and utilization of online databases to enhance academic research and learning.

1.3 Objectives of the Study

The main objective of this study is to assess students’ awareness and utilization of online databases in university libraries.

The specific objectives are to

1. identify the online databases available to students in university libraries

2. assess students’ level of awareness of these databases

3. examine the extent to which students utilize online databases for academic purposes

4. identify challenges affecting the utilization of online databases

5. suggest strategies to improve students’ awareness and use of online databases

The study seeks to answer the following questions

1. What online databases are available to students in university libraries

2. What is the level of students’ awareness of these databases

3. To what extent do students utilize online databases for academic purposes

4. What challenges affect students’ utilization of online databases

5. What strategies can improve students’ awareness and utilization of online databases

1.5 Significance of the Study

This study is significant for students, librarians, and university administrators. For students, it provides insights into effective ways of accessing and using online databases. Improved awareness and utilization of databases enhance research skills, academic performance, and access to credible information.

For librarians, the study highlights gaps in students’ awareness and usage patterns. Librarians can design training programs, tutorials, and awareness campaigns to ensure that students maximize the benefits of available databases. This will also improve library services and resource management.

University administrators will benefit by understanding the importance of investing in database subscriptions, providing technical support, and ensuring adequate infrastructure. Effective use of online databases enhances academic research quality, supports faculty and student projects, and strengthens the university’s academic reputation. The study also contributes to scholarly literature on information access and digital resource utilization in Nigerian university libraries.

1.6 Scope of the Study

This study focuses on undergraduate and postgraduate students in selected Nigerian universities. It examines students’ awareness and utilization of online databases, the challenges faced, and strategies to improve access and usage. The study is limited to databases subscribed to by the university libraries and does not cover free online resources outside these subscriptions. Library staff involved in database support are also considered for insights on awareness and training programs.

1.7 Definition of Key Terms
