Effect of Training and Development on Employee Performance in Manufacturing Firms.
CHAPTER ONE
1.0 Introduction
Training and development play a significant role in enhancing employee skills, knowledge, and performance. In manufacturing firms, well-trained employees contribute to higher productivity, improved product quality, and organizational competitiveness (Noe, 2017). Companies that invest in employee development benefit from lower turnover, greater efficiency, and innovative solutions.
Despite its importance, many manufacturing firms in Nigeria face challenges in providing effective training programs. Employees may lack access to up-to-date knowledge, modern technology skills, or proper mentorship, which affects their performance. This study investigates how training and development initiatives impact employee performance in manufacturing organizations.
1.1 Background of the Study
Training refers to programs designed to enhance employees’ current skills, while development focuses on future growth and career advancement (Armstrong, 2016). Manufacturing firms require employees with technical skills, problem-solving abilities, and adaptability.
Research shows that firms with structured training programs experience increased employee performance, reduced errors, and higher satisfaction levels. However, inadequate training leads to inefficiency, production delays, and workplace accidents. In Nigeria, challenges such as insufficient budgets, outdated equipment, and limited expertise hinder effective training (Eze & Chinedu, 2018).
Understanding the impact of training and development is crucial to ensure that employees are well-equipped to meet organizational goals and adapt to technological changes.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Many manufacturing firms in Nigeria struggle with poor employee performance, despite recognizing the importance of training. Employees may lack the skills needed for modern manufacturing processes.
The absence of structured development programs limits career growth, reduces motivation, and decreases productivity. Without proper training, employees may also compromise quality and safety standards, affecting the overall performance of the firm. This study aims to examine how training and development influence employee performance in the manufacturing sector.
