The Role of Effective Communication in Organizational Performance: A Study of Dangote Cement Plc
CHAPTER ONE
1.1 Background to the Study
Communication is the lifeblood of every organization. It facilitates understanding, coordination, and cooperation among employees and management. Without effective communication, organizational goals become difficult to achieve. In today’s competitive business environment, companies recognize that effective communication is not just about information exchange but also about creating understanding, trust, and shared meaning among stakeholders.
According to Okoro (2020), communication is the process of transmitting information, ideas, and feelings from one person or group to another to achieve mutual understanding. It helps organizations plan, coordinate, and control operations effectively. In a large organization such as Dangote Cement Plc, communication is vital for linking departments, clarifying roles, and promoting efficiency. A breakdown in communication often leads to misunderstandings, delays, and conflicts, which can negatively affect productivity.
The importance of effective communication extends beyond internal operations. It enhances employee engagement, customer satisfaction, and corporate image. Robbins and Judge (2019) emphasized that when employees clearly understand their duties, expectations, and organizational goals, they tend to perform better and remain motivated. Similarly, open communication between management and staff fosters trust, teamwork, and accountability.
Despite the growing recognition of communication’s importance, many organizations in Nigeria still struggle with ineffective communication systems. Factors such as poor information flow, hierarchical barriers, cultural differences, and inadequate feedback mechanisms hinder effective communication. In Dangote Cement Plc, which has multiple branches and departments, communication challenges may arise from the complex structure and large workforce. Therefore, studying the role of effective communication in enhancing organizational performance becomes essential.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Communication failures are among the leading causes of organizational inefficiency. Many Nigerian firms face problems such as unclear instructions, poor feedback systems, and lack of proper communication channels. These issues often lead to confusion, low morale, and conflict within the workplace.
In Dangote Cement Plc, poor communication may result in delayed decision-making, reduced productivity, and employee dissatisfaction. While management has implemented several communication channels, the effectiveness of these systems in improving performance remains uncertain.
