The Impact of Remittances on Household Welfare in Nigeria
THE IMPACT OF REMITTANCES ON HOUSEHOLD WELFARE IN NIGERIA
CHAPTER ONE
1.1 Background of the Study
Remittances have become one of the most important sources of foreign exchange and household income in developing countries. They represent the money sent by migrants to family members in their home countries to support consumption, education, health, and investment. In Nigeria, remittance inflows have increased significantly over the past decade, ranking among the highest in Sub-Saharan Africa (World Bank, 2023).
These funds play a major role in improving household welfare by reducing poverty, enhancing access to education, and providing a safety net during economic downturns. Remittances also contribute to national development by supporting foreign exchange reserves and reducing balance of payment deficits (CBN, 2023).
However, the impact of remittances on household welfare remains a subject of debate. While some studies argue that they promote savings and investment, others suggest that they may create dependency and reduce labor participation. Therefore, understanding the real impact of remittances on welfare in Nigeria is essential.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Although remittances contribute significantly to the Nigerian economy, their direct impact on household welfare remains unclear. Some families use remittances mainly for consumption rather than productive investment. In addition, fluctuations in remittance inflows due to global economic conditions can affect household stability.
This study seeks to determine whether remittances truly improve the living standards of households in Nigeria.
