Political Godfatherism and Democratic Consolidation in Nigeria: A Study of Anambra and Rivers States
Political Godfatherism and Democratic Consolidation in Nigeria: A Study of Anambra and Rivers States
ABSTRACT
Political godfatherism remains one of the most persistent threats to democracy in Nigeria. Despite repeated reforms aimed at strengthening electoral institutions, powerful individuals continue to influence political outcomes and control governance structures through patronage networks.
This study examines the effects of political godfatherism on democratic consolidation in Anambra and Rivers States. The research explores how political mentorship, financial influence, and elite domination affect free elections, governance quality, and political accountability.
A descriptive survey design was used, combining primary and secondary data from interviews, electoral reports, and literature. The findings reveal that political godfathers play decisive roles in candidate selection, campaign financing, and policy direction. Their influence often leads to electoral manipulation, poor governance, and instability.
However, in recent years, increased political awareness, judicial interventions, and civil society activism have gradually challenged godfather dominance, especially in Anambra State. The study concludes that curbing godfatherism is essential for achieving genuine democratic consolidation in Nigeria.
It recommends stronger political institutions, internal party democracy, and improved civic education to promote accountability and reduce elite capture of the democratic process.
CHAPTER ONE: INTRODUCTION
1.1 Background of the Study
Democracy thrives on popular participation, accountability, and rule of law. It allows citizens to choose leaders freely and ensures that power is derived from the people. However, in Nigeria, the practice of democracy has been undermined by political godfatherism — a system in which influential individuals sponsor candidates and expect loyalty in return.
Political godfathers use their financial strength and social connections to control party structures, manipulate primaries, and determine who occupies elective offices. This phenomenon has weakened institutional independence and distorted democratic ideals.
In Anambra State, godfatherism became prominent in the early 2000s, particularly with the political tussles involving prominent figures and their protégés. Similarly, in Rivers State, godfather politics has influenced transitions of power and fostered intense political rivalry.
The dominance of godfathers affects not only elections but also governance, as many public officials prioritize the interests of their sponsors over those of the people. Understanding this relationship is key to assessing Nigeria’s democratic progress and the obstacles to its consolidation.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Despite over two decades of democratic governance, Nigeria continues to face setbacks in political accountability and institutional independence. Political godfathers exert overwhelming influence over elected officials, thereby subverting the will of the electorate.
In Anambra and Rivers States, political godfatherism has triggered party conflicts, impeachment crises, and governance failures. Elected leaders often struggle between serving citizens and satisfying their political sponsors. This situation weakens democracy, breeds corruption, and fuels instability.
Although the Nigerian Constitution guarantees political freedom and equal participation, the practical reality remains shaped by elite control and patronage. The study therefore investigates how political godfatherism undermines democratic consolidation and what mechanisms can reduce its influence in the Nigerian political system.
1.3 Objectives of the Study

Assess recent reforms and their effectiveness in reducing godfather control.
-
Recommend strategies to strengthen democratic consolidation at both state and national levels.

1.6 Significance of the Study
This study is significant for scholars, policymakers, and democratic institutions. It contributes to political science literature by highlighting the mechanisms through which elite control undermines democracy in Nigeria.
The research also offers insights for reforming party systems and promoting internal democracy. Civil society organizations and electoral bodies can apply its findings to strengthen transparency, civic engagement, and political accountability.
Furthermore, the study encourages Nigerian youth and voters to demand credible elections and reject manipulative political practices.
1.7 Scope of the Study
The study focuses on Anambra State (South-East) and Rivers State (South-South) — two regions where godfather politics have prominently shaped political transitions. The period under review spans 2010 to 2025, covering multiple electoral cycles.
The research analyzes how political godfatherism influences candidate selection, governance style, and policy outcomes, emphasizing its effect on democratic consolidation at the subnational level.
1.8 Limitations of the Study
Some respondents were reluctant to discuss sensitive political issues, especially involving powerful individuals. In addition, limited access to confidential political records posed challenges. Nevertheless, triangulation of data from interviews, media archives, and electoral documents ensured credible and valid results.
