An Evaluation of Digital Library Services and Their Effect on Academic Performance in Covenant University
Chapter One
1.1 Background of the Study
Digital libraries have changed how students access information. They provide electronic books, journals, databases and multimedia resources that support learning. Because of these digital tools, students can study at any time and from any location. This flexibility helps them complete assignments faster and with more confidence (Ogunleye, 2020). As a result, digital library services have become an important part of modern education.
Covenant University has invested in digital library systems to improve teaching and research. The university provides access to online databases, institutional repositories and electronic journals. It also offers digital training sessions so that students can use these resources with ease. Even with these efforts, students use the resources at different levels. Some students depend heavily on digital materials, while others rely more on print resources.
Because academic success depends on access to quality information, the relationship between digital library use and academic performance deserves attention. Researchers suggest that regular use of digital resources increases students’ understanding of course content. It also improves their ability to write research papers and complete school projects (Adeoye, 2021). Therefore, it is important to evaluate how digital library services influence the academic performance of students in Covenant University.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Covenant University provides many digital resources. However, not all students use them effectively. Some students struggle with login issues. Others lack basic digital literacy skills. Many students also find it difficult to navigate online databases. These challenges reduce the full benefits of digital library services.
Another concern is that some students depend on free internet sources such as blogs and general search engines. They often use these sources instead of the university’s digital platforms. Because of this behaviour, their assignments may lack quality and academic depth. Therefore, it is important to examine whether digital library services truly influence academic performance and how students engage with them.
1.3 Objectives of the Study
The main objective of this study is to evaluate the effect of digital library services on students’ academic performance in Covenant University.
The specific objectives are to
-
identify the types of digital library services available to students
-
determine the level of students’ use of digital library resources
-
examine the effect of digital library services on academic performance
-
identify the challenges students face when using digital library resources
1.4 Research Questions
The study seeks to answer the following questions
-
What types of digital library services are available to students
-
What is the level of students’ use of digital library resources
-
How do digital library services affect academic performance
-
What challenges do students face when using digital library resources
1.5 Significance of the Study
This study will help the university understand how students use digital library services. It will also show the real impact of these services on academic performance. Librarians can use the findings to improve digital training programmes. Lecturers can also encourage students to use reliable academic sources. The study will further guide administrators when making decisions about digital investments.
Students will benefit as well. They will learn how digital library tools support better grades and stronger research skills. This understanding will help them use the digital library more effectively.
1.6 Scope of the Study
This study focuses on digital library services in Covenant University. It examines the use of electronic resources and their effect on academic performance. The study also covers challenges students face while using digital systems. It does not include print library services or students from other institutions.
