An Evaluation of the Effect of Pasture Improvement on Small Ruminant Production in Southwestern Nigeria
CHAPTER ONE
1.1 Background to the Study
Pasture improvement is an essential strategy for sustainable livestock management and productivity. It involves cultivating high-quality forage species, maintaining soil fertility, and managing grazing systems effectively. In Nigeria, small ruminants such as goats and sheep play a vital role in household income and nutrition. However, their productivity often depends on the availability and quality of pasture throughout the year (Olayemi, 2021).
In Southwestern Nigeria, traditional grazing systems are still dominant. Unfortunately, natural pastures in this region have low nutritive value, especially during the dry season. As a result, animals experience slow growth, low fertility, and reduced meat and milk yield. Improved pastures, on the other hand, offer better forage quality, which enhances animal health and performance. Therefore, adopting pasture improvement practices can significantly boost small ruminant productivity and rural livelihoods (Akinyele, 2020).
Despite these potential benefits, pasture improvement practices are rarely implemented by smallholder farmers. High costs of establishment, limited technical knowledge, and land scarcity remain major barriers. Consequently, evaluating how improved pastures affect small ruminant production will provide practical insights for livestock development and policy formulation.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Poor pasture quality is one of the major constraints limiting small ruminant production in Southwestern Nigeria. Overgrazing, land degradation, and lack of improved forage species have led to nutritional deficiencies in livestock. Moreover, limited extension services and inadequate farmer education hinder the adoption of improved pasture systems (Ogunjimi, 2020). As a result, many farmers rely on crop residues and low-quality feeds that reduce animal performance. This study, therefore, evaluates the effect of pasture improvement on small ruminant production in Southwestern Nigeria to identify practical solutions.
1.3 Objectives of the Study
The main objective of this study is to evaluate the effect of pasture improvement on small ruminant production in Southwestern Nigeria.
The specific objectives are to:
-
Assess the current state of pasture management among small ruminant farmers.
-
Determine the relationship between improved pasture and small ruminant productivity.
-
Identify challenges affecting pasture improvement programs.
-
Recommend strategies to enhance pasture development for improved livestock output.
1.4 Research Questions
-
What is the current state of pasture management among small ruminant farmers in Southwestern Nigeria?
-
How does improved pasture influence small ruminant productivity?
-
What are the challenges hindering pasture improvement in the region?
-
What strategies can promote sustainable pasture development and management?
1.5 Significance of the Study
The study will be beneficial to farmers, researchers, and policymakers. It will highlight the advantages of improved pastures in livestock nutrition and performance. Moreover, it will guide agricultural agencies in developing effective pasture management programs that support sustainable animal production. Ultimately, the findings will contribute to national efforts aimed at achieving food security and rural development.
