1.1 Background of the Study
The respiratory system plays a key role in maintaining life by facilitating gas exchange between the body and the environment. Lung volume refers to the amount of air a person can inhale or exhale, while lung capacity combines different volumes to represent total respiratory potential (West, 2018). These parameters are influenced by several factors, including age, gender, body build, and height.
Among these factors, body height shows a particularly strong association with lung size and function. Taller individuals generally possess larger thoracic cavities, which allow greater lung expansion and higher volumes. Consequently, researchers often use height to predict normal lung function values.
However, reference standards for lung volumes are often based on Western populations. Because body proportions vary across regions and ethnicities, these standards may not accurately represent Nigerian students. Therefore, local studies are essential to establish baseline data and improve medical assessment.
This study will explore how lung volumes and capacities relate to body height among undergraduate students in Nigeria. The results will provide useful insights for respiratory physiologists and health professionals.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Spirometric reference values used in Nigerian hospitals are often derived from foreign populations. This mismatch may lead to inaccurate interpretations of pulmonary function tests. There is, therefore, a need to develop height-based lung function data that reflect the Nigerian body structure.
1.3 Aim and Objectives of the Study
The aim of this study is to determine the relationship between lung volumes and body height among undergraduate students.
The specific objectives are to:

Measure various lung volumes and capacities using spirometry.

Record the body height of each participant.

Analyze how height correlates with the measured respiratory parameters.
1.4 Significance of the Study
The findings will provide reference data for lung function assessments among Nigerian adults. They will also help physicians and physiotherapists interpret spirometry results more accurately. Furthermore, the study will enhance anatomical and physiological understanding of the respiratory system.
1.5 Scope of the Study
This study will include healthy undergraduate students aged 18 to 30 years. Smokers and individuals with respiratory diseases will be excluded.
1.6 Operational Definition of Terms

Lung Volume: The amount of air in the lungs during different phases of respiration.

Lung Capacity: The total of two or more lung volumes representing functional respiratory limits.
