1.1 Background of the Study

When waste is not managed effectively, it poses serious health risks and contributes to environmental degradation. The World Bank (2023) estimates that global waste generation will rise by 70% by 2050 if current practices continue. This makes effective waste management a public health priority, especially in densely populated urban centers.
Urban areas face unique challenges in managing solid waste due to rapid industrialization, inadequate infrastructure, and poor community participation. In many cities, waste is often dumped in open spaces, drainage channels, or streets, leading to blocked waterways and flooding. Such unsanitary conditions attract flies, rats, and mosquitoes that transmit diseases such as cholera, typhoid, and malaria (Adedeji & Musa, 2022). Therefore, effective waste disposal is essential for preventing outbreaks and promoting environmental hygiene.
Public health authorities emphasize that awareness and behavioral change are key to solving urban waste problems. Many residents lack adequate knowledge about the health consequences of improper waste handling. Some dispose of waste indiscriminately because of limited access to collection services or lack of enforcement of sanitation laws. Others are unaware that improper waste disposal can contaminate food and water sources, spreading infectious diseases (Ogunleye, 2021).
Sustainable waste management requires collaboration among households, government agencies, and private sectors. When residents understand the link between sanitation and health, they are more likely to adopt proper disposal methods. Hence, assessing the current waste disposal practices and their health implications among urban residents is necessary for developing evidence-based interventions that protect public health and the environment.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Despite efforts by municipal authorities, improper waste disposal remains a major environmental health issue in many cities. Piles of garbage are often seen along roadsides and open spaces, emitting offensive odors and serving as breeding grounds for disease vectors. Many urban residents still engage in unsafe disposal practices due to inadequate facilities, poor supervision, and weak enforcement of sanitation regulations.
These conditions lead to health problems such as diarrhea, skin infections, and vector-borne diseases. Children and the elderly are especially vulnerable to these risks. The persistence of such problems suggests that existing waste management strategies are either poorly implemented or not well understood by the public. Therefore, this study aims to assess waste disposal practices and their health implications among urban residents to identify gaps and propose solutions.

2.0 Literature Review
2.1 Concept of Waste and Waste Disposal
Waste refers to any material that is no longer useful and is discarded after use. It can be solid, liquid, or gaseous. Solid waste is the most visible and includes household garbage, market refuse, and industrial by-products. Waste disposal involves the proper collection, transportation, treatment, and final placement of waste materials (World Health Organization, 2022). Proper disposal ensures that waste does not harm human health or the environment.
In urban settings, effective waste management depends on the availability of functional infrastructure, government policy, and public participation. Where these factors are lacking, waste accumulates in open spaces, causing pollution and attracting disease vectors (Ogunleye, 2021).
2.2 Waste Disposal Methods in Urban Areas

Burning waste emits smoke and toxins that irritate the respiratory tract and increase the risk of chronic diseases (World Bank, 2023).
Children and scavengers who come in direct contact with waste face even higher risks. According to Akinyemi (2021), waste handlers in cities without protective gear often develop skin rashes, eye infections, and respiratory problems. The cumulative effect of poor waste management can also lead to reduced productivity and higher healthcare costs.
2.4 Factors Influencing Waste Disposal Practices
The way residents dispose of waste depends on several factors, including awareness, income level, and accessibility of waste collection services. In areas where waste bins or collection trucks are unavailable, residents may resort to open dumping or burning. Education also influences behavior—individuals who understand the health risks of poor sanitation are more likely to practice proper disposal (Oluwole & Ibrahim, 2022).
Social attitudes and government enforcement also matter. In cities where waste management laws are weak or poorly enforced, people often neglect their responsibilities. Conversely, consistent public education and regular waste collection services promote better hygiene practices.

Adedeji and Musa (2022) found that neighborhoods with organized waste collection had lower cases of waterborne diseases than those relying on open dumping. In the context of waste disposal, this theory suggests that residents’ behaviors are shaped by environmental conditions, community norms, and institutional policies. Effective waste management therefore requires not only individual responsibility but also supportive community structures and government regulation.
