Audience Perception of Violence in Nollywood Movies
Chapter One
1.1 Background of the Study
Nollywood, one of the world’s largest film industries, has become a dominant source of entertainment and cultural expression. Over the years, however, an increasing number of movies depict violence as a major storytelling element. According to Udeh (2022), these portrayals often include scenes of crime, revenge, and domestic conflict, which raise questions about their social impact.
Movies can influence viewers’ emotions, attitudes, and behaviors. When violent scenes are presented repeatedly, they may desensitize audiences or shape perceptions of aggression as normal behavior. On the other hand, some scholars argue that film violence reflects social realities and helps draw attention to pressing issues. Ogu (2023) explains that viewers interpret such scenes differently depending on their values, background, and exposure level.
Understanding audience perception is crucial because films do not exist in isolation—they mirror and shape cultural attitudes. This study investigates how audiences perceive violence in Nollywood movies and whether they view it as entertainment, education, or negative influence.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
The increasing depiction of violence in Nollywood films raises concerns about its influence on viewers. Some believe it encourages aggression, while others see it as artistic expression. The study seeks to determine how audiences interpret violent content and its perceived social effects.

The main objective is to examine audience perception of violence in Nollywood movies. The specific objectives are:
-
