Biochemical Assessment of Phytochemical Components and Antioxidant Activities of Selected Medicinal Plants in Nigeria
ABSTRACT
Medicinal plants play an important role in traditional healthcare systems in Nigeria. Their healing effects come from their phytochemical composition and antioxidant properties. This study investigates the phytochemicals and antioxidant activities of selected Nigerian medicinal plants. The goal is to provide scientific evidence supporting their medicinal use. Researchers performed standard phytochemical screening to detect alkaloids, flavonoids, tannins, saponins, phenols, and terpenoids. Antioxidant activity was tested using the DPPH radical scavenging assay and the Ferric Reducing Antioxidant Power (FRAP) method. The results showed that the plant samples contained different levels of bioactive compounds, and Plant A showed the highest antioxidant activity. These findings support the traditional use of the plants and provide useful information for biochemistry research, pharmacology, and natural product development.

1.0 Introduction
Medicinal plants remain essential in primary healthcare in Nigeria. Many rural communities rely on them because they have limited access to synthetic drugs. These plants contain biologically active compounds called phytochemicals, which provide therapeutic and nutritional benefits. Researchers have increasingly studied these compounds to validate traditional knowledge and support modern drug development. Oxidative stress, caused by excess reactive oxygen species, can lead to chronic diseases such as cancer, diabetes, and heart disorders. Therefore, plants with strong antioxidant activity help protect cells from damage. This study evaluates the biochemical composition and antioxidant potential of selected Nigerian medicinal plants to provide clear scientific insights.
1.1 Background of the Study
Nigeria has a rich variety of plants, many of which are used in traditional medicine. However, researchers still lack sufficient data on their biochemical properties. Phytochemicals such as flavonoids, polyphenols, tannins, and alkaloids offer strong antioxidant and therapeutic effects. By identifying their concentrations, scientists can improve their use in pharmaceuticals and nutraceuticals.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Although people widely use medicinal plants to treat diseases, researchers do not have enough data on their biochemical composition and antioxidant activity. Many species remain scientifically under-studied. Without proper evaluation, people cannot safely and effectively use these plants.
1.3 Objectives of the Study
The main goal of this research is to study the phytochemicals and antioxidant activity of selected medicinal plants in Nigeria. The study specifically aims to identify the phytochemicals in the plant extracts, measure the concentration of bioactive compounds, evaluate antioxidant activity using DPPH and FRAP assays, and compare the biochemical profiles among the selected plants.
1.4 Research Questions
This study addresses the following questions. First, what phytochemicals exist in the selected plants? Second, which plant shows the strongest antioxidant activity? Third, how do the biochemical profiles vary among the plants?
1.5 Significance of the Study
This study provides scientific evidence supporting Nigerian medicinal plants. It helps researchers select plants for drug development, offers reference material for biochemistry students, and contributes to documenting traditional medicinal resources.
1.6 Scope of the Study
The study focuses on analyzing the phytochemical composition and antioxidant activity of selected Nigerian medicinal plants. It does not include toxicity testing on animals or clinical trials on humans.
