Comparative Study of Nasal Index among Different Ethnic Groups in Nigeria
CHAPTER ONE
1.1 Background of the Study
The nasal index represents the ratio of nasal width to nasal height, multiplied by 100. It is a useful anthropometric parameter for identifying ethnic and racial differences in facial morphology (Oladipo & Olabiyi, 2019). The shape and size of the nose vary widely due to genetic, climatic, and adaptive factors.
For example, individuals from warm, humid regions tend to have broader noses, while those from colder, drier areas usually have narrower nasal openings. These differences help regulate airflow and temperature, highlighting how anatomy adapts to the environment. In Nigeria, which is home to over 250 ethnic groups, nasal forms show considerable variation.
Understanding nasal index variations has practical value in forensic science, anthropology, and plastic surgery. It helps in identifying individuals, reconstructing facial features, and designing region-specific medical procedures. Despite this importance, available Nigerian data remain limited, and existing studies often focus on only one or two ethnic groups.
Therefore, this research aims to compare nasal indices among major Nigerian ethnic groups. The results will provide baseline data for clinical, forensic, and anthropological applications.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Ethnic variations in nasal shape exist, but comprehensive Nigerian data remain scarce. As a result, forensic and clinical practitioners lack reliable reference values. This limitation affects facial reconstruction, prosthetic design, and forensic identification. Hence, it is necessary to establish nasal index data for different Nigerian ethnic groups.
1.3 Aim and Objectives of the Study
The aim of this study is to compare the nasal index among different ethnic groups in Nigeria.
The specific objectives are to:
-
Measure nasal width and height in adult males and females.
-
Calculate nasal index values and classify nasal types.
-
Compare results among major Nigerian ethnic groups.
1.4 Significance of the Study
The study will provide population-specific data useful in forensic anthropology and medical practice. It will also help anthropologists trace evolutionary adaptation to environmental factors. Furthermore, it will serve as a teaching reference in anatomy and physical anthropology.
1.5 Scope of the Study
The study will include adult participants from selected Nigerian ethnic groups. Measurements will be taken using standard anthropometric tools and analyzed statistically for variations.
1.6 Operational Definition of Terms
-
Nasal Index: A ratio of nasal width to height, multiplied by 100.
-
Ethnic Group: A population sharing common cultural and genetic characteristics.
-
Anthropometry: The measurement of human body dimensions for scientific study.
