Comparative Study of Pasture Grasses on the Performance of Grazing Sheep in Nigeria
CHAPTER ONE
1.1 Background to the Study
Sheep production plays a significant role in Nigeria’s livestock sector, contributing to income generation, food supply, and raw materials for industries. However, the productivity of grazing sheep depends largely on the quality and availability of pasture (Adeniji, 2020). Good-quality forage provides essential nutrients for growth, reproduction, and maintenance, while poor pasture results in low weight gain and poor health.
Nigeria’s diverse agro-ecological zones support various pasture grasses such as Panicum maximum, Centrosema pubescens, and Stylosanthes guianensis. The performance of grazing sheep on these grasses varies depending on their nutrient content, digestibility, and seasonal availability (Ogunwale et al., 2021). Therefore, comparing different pasture grasses is essential to identify the most suitable types for optimum sheep production.
With the growing demand for mutton and other sheep products, improving feed resources through pasture selection and management is vital. This study will help farmers and researchers understand which grasses best support the growth and performance of grazing sheep under Nigerian conditions.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Many sheep farmers rely on natural pastures without considering their nutritional quality. As a result, animals experience nutrient deficiencies, reduced growth rates, and low reproductive performance. Inadequate knowledge of suitable pasture types has also limited productivity. Therefore, there is a need to conduct a comparative study on different pasture grasses to identify the ones that support optimal performance in grazing sheep.
1.3 Objectives of the Study
The main objective of this study is to compare the performance of grazing sheep on different pasture grasses in Nigeria.
Specific objectives are to:
-
Identify the common pasture grasses available in the study area.
-
Evaluate the nutritional composition of selected grasses.
-
Assess the growth performance of grazing sheep fed on each grass type.
-
Recommend the best-performing pasture for sheep production.
1.4 Research Questions
-
Which pasture grasses are most common in the area?
-
What is the nutritional value of the selected grasses?
-
How do these grasses affect the growth of grazing sheep?
-
Which grass promotes the highest productivity?
1.5 Significance of the Study
This study will provide practical recommendations to farmers and livestock extension officers. It will guide pasture management strategies and help improve animal performance, contributing to the country’s livestock development goals.
1.6 Scope of the Study
The study will focus on selected pasture grasses and their effects on the growth and productivity of grazing sheep in Nigeria.
