Design of a Cloud-Based Hospital Management System with Secure Data Synchronization
CHAPTER ONE
INTRODUCTION
1.1 Background of the Study
The healthcare sector is one of the most critical areas requiring efficient management of patient records, staff schedules, and hospital operations. However, many hospitals in Nigeria still rely on paper-based systems, which often result in data loss, duplication, and inefficiency (Ogunleye, 2021). Cloud computing provides a cost-effective and scalable solution for data storage and management, enabling hospitals to maintain electronic medical records securely.
A cloud-based hospital management system allows different departments such as pharmacy, laboratory, and administration to access synchronized data in real time. This improves collaboration, reduces redundancy, and ensures continuity of care (Kumar & Sharma, 2022). Furthermore, integrating secure data synchronization ensures that patient information remains consistent and protected across multiple platforms.
This study focuses on designing a cloud-based hospital management system with secure data synchronization to improve efficiency, data integrity, and accessibility in healthcare delivery.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Many hospitals in Nigeria face challenges in managing patient information due to fragmented and manual record-keeping systems. These issues lead to delayed services, data inconsistency, and errors in diagnosis and treatment (Adebayo, 2020). Moreover, the absence of secure synchronization mechanisms makes it difficult to maintain accurate patient data across departments.
There is a need for a centralized, cloud-based system that can store, update, and synchronize hospital data securely, ensuring that all authorized users access the most current information.
1.3 Aim and Objectives of the Study
The main aim of this study is to design and implement a cloud-based hospital management system with secure data synchronization.
The specific objectives are to:
-
Design a database structure for storing hospital records in the cloud.
-
Develop a secure synchronization protocol for data exchange among departments.
-
Implement authentication features to protect sensitive patient information.
-
Evaluate the systemβs performance and security effectiveness.
1.4 Research Questions
-
How can cloud computing improve hospital data management and accessibility?
-
What mechanisms ensure secure synchronization of hospital records across departments?
-
How can data confidentiality be maintained in a cloud environment?
-
What performance benefits result from using a cloud-based hospital system?
1.5 Significance of the Study
This study contributes to digital transformation in the Nigerian healthcare system by promoting the use of cloud technologies. It enhances operational efficiency and ensures data accuracy across hospital departments. Additionally, it helps policymakers and hospital administrators understand the importance of secure cloud adoption (Eze, 2023).
1.6 Scope of the Study
The study focuses on the design of a cloud-based management system for hospitals in Nigeria. The prototype will include modules for patient registration, appointment scheduling, billing, and record management.
