Development of a Facial Recognition Attendance Management System
Development of a Facial Recognition Attendance Management System
CHAPTER ONE
INTRODUCTION
1.1 Background of the Study
Attendance management is a vital component of academic and organizational administration. Traditional attendance methods, such as manual signing or card swiping, are time-consuming and prone to human errors or manipulation (Ogunleye, 2023). With the advancement of biometric technologies, facial recognition offers a more efficient and secure approach to verifying identities and recording attendance automatically.
Facial recognition technology captures and analyzes facial features to identify individuals accurately. It provides contactless verification, reduces time wastage, and eliminates proxy attendance. Moreover, it integrates easily with digital databases to store and retrieve attendance records in real time (Eze & Musa, 2022).
Therefore, this research focuses on developing a facial recognition attendance management system that enhances accuracy, reliability, and ease of tracking attendance in academic institutions.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Many institutions still use manual or card-based attendance systems that are inefficient and vulnerable to manipulation. Such systems consume time, cause administrative delays, and make data analysis difficult. Consequently, there is a pressing need for an automated and secure system that can identify individuals using facial recognition for effective attendance management.
1.3 Aim and Objectives of the Study
The primary aim of this study is to develop a facial recognition attendance management system that automatically records attendance through image processing.
The specific objectives are to:
-
Design and implement a facial recognition model for identity verification.
-
Develop a database for storing attendance records.
-
Create a user-friendly interface for managing attendance data.
-
Evaluate the system’s performance in terms of speed and accuracy.
1.4 Significance of the Study
This project will improve administrative efficiency by automating attendance tracking. It reduces manual errors, prevents impersonation, and enhances data security. Additionally, it supports digital transformation in educational and corporate environments by integrating biometric verification with database management systems.
1.5 Scope of the Study
The study focuses on developing a prototype system using facial recognition for attendance management. It is limited to student attendance within a small institution and does not include large-scale deployment or integration with other biometric systems.
1.6 Definition of Terms
Facial Recognition: A biometric technology that identifies individuals by analyzing facial features.
Biometrics: The measurement and analysis of human physical characteristics for identification.
Database: A structured collection of data stored electronically.
