Effect of Different Mulching Materials on Soil Moisture Retention and Crop Growth
chapter one
Background of the Study
Mulching is a simple and effective method for conserving soil moisture and improving crop growth. It involves covering the soil surface with materials such as leaves, straw, or polythene. These materials reduce evaporation and protect the soil from direct sunlight. In tropical regions, where rainfall is irregular, mulching helps farmers maintain soil moisture for longer periods.
Soil moisture plays an important role in plant growth. It influences nutrient uptake, seed germination, and root development. Research shows that organic mulches also enrich the soil by adding nutrients as they decompose (Olorunfemi, 2019). Therefore, the choice of mulching material affects soil properties and crop performance. This study aims to compare the effects of different mulches on soil moisture and crop growth.
Statement of the Problem
Many farmers face the challenge of water scarcity, especially during dry seasons. Inadequate soil moisture reduces crop yield and increases production cost. However, the best mulching material for improving soil moisture retention is not well known among local farmers. This study seeks to identify which mulching material gives the best result.
Aim and Objectives of the Study
The aim of this study is to determine the effect of different mulching materials on soil moisture retention and crop growth. The specific objectives are to:
-
Assess soil moisture levels under different mulching materials.
-
Evaluate crop growth performance with each mulch type.
-
Identify the most effective mulch for conserving moisture.
-
Recommend suitable mulching practices for farmers.
Significance of the Study
The study will help farmers understand how various mulch materials affect soil water and crop yield. It will also promote the use of affordable and locally available materials for sustainable agriculture.
Scope of the Study
The research focuses on different organic and inorganic mulches applied to selected crops. It examines their influence on soil moisture and plant performance.
Definition of Terms
Mulching: The practice of covering soil with materials to retain moisture and improve fertility.
Soil moisture: The amount of water contained in the soil.
Organic mulch: Natural materials such as grass or straw used to cover the soil surface.
