Effect of Employee Training and Development on Organizational Performance.
CHAPTER ONE
1.0 Introduction
Employee training and development are essential components of human resource management that directly impact organizational performance. Organizations that invest in developing employees’ skills, knowledge, and competencies are better positioned to achieve strategic goals, adapt to changes, and maintain competitive advantage (Noe, 2017).
Training equips employees with the necessary technical skills, while development prepares them for future responsibilities and career growth. In today’s dynamic business environment, continuous learning has become a strategic tool to enhance productivity, reduce errors, and improve service delivery.
1.1 Background of the Study
Training and development refer to systematic processes aimed at improving employees’ knowledge, skills, and attitudes to enhance performance and achieve organizational objectives (Armstrong, 2020). Training typically focuses on immediate skill acquisition, such as operating new technology or understanding procedures, whereas development is broader, focusing on long-term growth and leadership potential.
In many Nigerian organizations, employee performance is often hindered by skill gaps, outdated knowledge, and insufficient professional development opportunities. This situation results in low productivity, poor service quality, and limited innovation. Research shows that organizations that implement structured training programs experience higher employee engagement, better problem-solving, and increased organizational profitability (Salas et al., 2012).
Organizations like banks, manufacturing firms, and service providers in Nigeria have started to recognize the importance of employee development. For instance, banks provide training on financial regulations, digital banking, and customer service, while manufacturing firms focus on technical skills, safety, and process efficiency. Despite these efforts, challenges remain, such as limited budgets, inadequate follow-up on training effectiveness, and resistance to change.
Examining the effect of employee training and development on organizational performance is therefore critical. It helps organizations identify effective strategies, evaluate the impact of learning initiatives, and ensure that employee growth translates into measurable improvements in productivity, service quality, and overall performance.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Many organizations in Nigeria struggle with low employee productivity and substandard performance despite having structured human resource systems. Inadequate training programs, limited investment in employee development, and lack of proper evaluation often result in skill gaps.
Employees may possess theoretical knowledge but lack practical competencies to perform effectively. Consequently, organizations face reduced efficiency, poor customer satisfaction, and loss of competitive advantage. This highlights the need to investigate how employee training and development influence organizational performance.
