1.0 Introduction
Deforestation has become one of the most pressing environmental problems facing many developing countries today. Forests play an essential role in maintaining ecological balance, regulating the climate, and protecting the soil from erosion. However, rapid population growth and agricultural expansion have increased the demand for land, leading to large-scale deforestation (Ogunleye, 2021). Consequently, the removal of vegetation cover has exposed soils to erosion and reduced agricultural productivity.
In Nigeria, the problem of deforestation has intensified over the past three decades. Forests that once covered vast areas have been cleared for farming, logging, and urban development. Auchi, a major town in Edo State, has experienced significant deforestation due to population pressure and economic activities such as farming, sand mining, and construction. As a result, the area has become increasingly vulnerable to soil erosion and declining crop yields. This study therefore investigates the impact of deforestation on soil erosion and agricultural productivity in Auchi.
1.1 Background to the Study
Forests serve as natural barriers against erosion by binding the soil with roots and reducing the velocity of surface runoff. When trees are removed, rainfall easily washes away the topsoil, which contains essential nutrients for plant growth. Consequently, deforestation leads to declining soil fertility and lower agricultural yields (Audu & Abah, 2019).
In Auchi, deforestation has accelerated as farmlands expand to meet the food needs of a growing population. Logging for timber and fuelwood has also contributed to forest depletion. In addition, poor land management practices, including bush burning and overgrazing, have worsened land degradation. These activities not only reduce soil stability but also increase the sediment load in nearby rivers and streams. Therefore, the combined effect of deforestation and soil erosion threatens food security and environmental sustainability in the region.
Over the years, the government and local communities have made efforts to promote reforestation and sustainable farming. However, these measures have not fully addressed the underlying causes of deforestation. A scientific analysis of the relationship between forest loss, soil erosion, and agricultural productivity in Auchi is necessary for evidence-based policy decisions.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Despite the recognition of deforestation as a major environmental issue, its impact on soil quality and agricultural output in Auchi has not been adequately studied. Many farmers continue to clear vegetation without understanding the long-term consequences of soil degradation. Consequently, agricultural productivity continues to decline even as the demand for food increases.
Furthermore, uncontrolled logging and farming on steep slopes have made erosion more severe. The topsoil is frequently washed away during heavy rainfall, leaving behind infertile subsoil. This problem threatens the livelihoods of rural households and the sustainability of agricultural systems. Therefore, this study seeks to assess how deforestation contributes to soil erosion and to determine its effects on crop productivity in Auchi.
1.3 Aim and Objectives of the Study
The aim of this study is to examine the impact of deforestation on soil erosion and agricultural productivity in Auchi, Edo State.
The specific objectives are to:

1.5 Significance of the Study
This research provides an in-depth understanding of the environmental consequences of deforestation in Auchi. The findings will help environmental planners, policymakers, and local farmers design sustainable land management strategies. Furthermore, the study will guide the Edo State Ministry of Environment in implementing reforestation programs and erosion control measures.
In addition, the research contributes to academic knowledge in environmental geography and agricultural sustainability. It emphasizes the link between human activities and land degradation, highlighting the need for conservation-oriented farming practices. Ultimately, this study aims to promote the sustainable use of forest resources for improved agricultural productivity and environmental stability.
1.6 Scope of the Study
The study focuses on Auchi and its surrounding communities within Etsako West Local Government Area of Edo State. It examines deforestation trends, soil erosion patterns, and their combined effects on agricultural productivity. The time frame spans from 2010 to 2024, reflecting recent land use changes. Although the study addresses human and environmental factors, it excludes laboratory-based soil chemistry analysis.
